All You Need Is Love

Awww!!!! I was thoroughly disappointed with Kyr in the last book because of his mistakes, but he made up for it and then some in this last installment. The writing was great and flowed so well, it swept me away before I could complain about wanting to see Kyr suffer. And then I wished I hadn't. This author owes me a new shirt.

This series has been such a trip, dealing with young marriage and struggling with a career, being a mom to four kids, DEALING *glares at Kyr* with second thoughts on a relationship you started out with a lie vs one that bloomed from childhood. Polly 3 mostly dealt with what happens after the cheating, and it made me so sad to see Pollyanna struggle with what was the right thing to do for her kids. I did get annoyed with her but I couldn't blame her, and I couldn't blame HIM either because he'd already suffered enough. (I blame the kids. curse your cuteness).

The story wrapped up nicely with a sweet touch that you can only really get with having children and a mother who's just as innocent, if not naive, about the way the world works. And the ending proved that it didn't matter what anyone thought; as long as their children were happy and love continued to flow, it was all that mattered.

I recommend this to those who love a good romance that isn't at all perfect except for when they're in each other's arms. I loved the character development from the other installments, and the drama of juggling a career with family. I absolutely adore the twins and their insightfulness. The ending was amazing, but I must say, I sense a trend of exhibitionism in the epilogues.... yaaaas.

Oh, and for those who get squirmish with sex, it's only in the last chapter. And the epilogue. *sings* B-I-N-G-O......

Wonderful rollercoaster ride!

Wow, where to begin? Okay this book picks right from the last one. So if you haven't read the others I suggest you go do so now. You wouldn't want to the miss the story up to this point.
Ok I will admit that from the first chapter in this book I was boohooing like a kid that was told that would be no presents for me this year. Yes it was that serious. Polly, my heart goes out to you, that poor girl was hit left and right like she was in a pro boxing fight. She struggled on for her kids and for that I admire her. Now Kyr, I admit did a idiotic thing, but come on he is a guy, (sorry for guys that read this. To give him props he did FINALLY realized how he been treating her and his feeling for her.
This book is all about them working out the personal stuff in themselves and then coming together to make it better. After he did a lot of searching and a wonderful apology scene. (one of my favorites that, had me crying AGAIN). I would definitely recommend this to everyone.
This has to be one of my favorites series of all time. Kudos to you Ms. Marian Tee, for making me cry Twice! and I did love the scenes where you made laugh so much I almost started crying again. Case in point, "snapchat? I should slap him and make them chat about it." LOL! love it!

BINGO is a Fun Game Again!!

This is the first review I'll be writing in a long time so you'll have to excuse how informal it will be.

Okay, where to start? I finished reading this book not 3 minutes ago and my eyes are still puffy. Oh before I forget, I'm in the office right now. My co-workers think I'm insane for crying like a lunatic while immersed in my e-reader, but I couldn't care any less. I loved this book so much. Correction: I LOVED THIS SERIES SO MUCH. Marian made me cry, she made me laugh, she made me think about my own child, she made me think of I'll be if the same thing happened to me, and she made me see BINGO in a whole other light. Seriously? Whilst playing BINGO? I never would have thought about that.

Kyr and Polly have changed so much in this book. Kyr for the better, Polly--well, it's somewhat understandable why she is the way she is. There's a lot of pain and heartache in this last installment of the series, especially when Dio and Ella are acting all grown up to protect their mother. I think in all of Marian's series, except The Rockstar and His Fangirl, I cried to this the most. By now I'm used to this sadistic streak of my favorite author, but I love her nonetheless.

Marian never fails to deliver fresh, entertaining, and amazing stories. I have all her books and I have vowed to never miss a single one. Keep it up, Marian. We love you!!!

Middle East: A Truly Unexamined History is Doomed to Unfold Itself

This book couldn’t be timelier to appear at this time, especially given the situation in the Middle East which seems to be up in flames these days. It is fair to say that many historians will point to the meddling in the affairs of the Middle East by the allied powers after the First World War, namely the British, French and the Russian imperialists who were playing that great game of war to pick up the pieces of the dying Ottoman Empire. It was the strategy of those imperialists then, and even ‘ is’ to this day to divide and conquer by pushing on small ethnic and religious groups to rise up against each other causing tormenting refugee problems that we are witnessing today. That was the scene in Anatolia, present day Turkey, after the First World War: Armenians fighting a civil war after having allowed themselves to be pushed against the peoples they had been living with, the Turks, for hundreds, even thousands of years, and making not only their neighbors but their own people pay the price for it, very dearly, as Justin McCarthy describes so vividly in a most readable fashion for the first time ever. We can actually surmise what is happening today in the Middle East through the lens of what happened between Turks and Armenians. Even as the First Prime Minister of the First Republic of Armenia, Hovhannes Katchaznouni as mentioned in the book “Turks and Armenians,” and elsewhere, stated back in 1923 that the Russian, British and French imperialism used the Armenians and when, finally, they were left alone, they had nothing else to do but to bemoan the fact that they had been betrayed. Prime Minister Katchaznouni even admitted that they had made a big mistake in collaborating with the Russians in the east and the allies in the west fighting the Ottoman comrades instead of fighting the imperialists. In the meantime a modern Turkish nation was born out of the ashes of the Ottoman Empire.
It is often said that “history is written by victors,” but McCarthy’s book shows that the Turkish-Armenian history out there has been written mostly by the losers, and the record needs to be set straight to the benefit of both the victor and the loser in the long run. As mentioned elsewhere, the aftermath of the Fall of Constantinople (1453) is a prime example of history written by the losers. A wave of Greek scholars emigrated to the west after the event that essentially marked the end of the Byzantine Empire, bringing with them extremely biased accounts of Ottoman brutality. The vilification of the Ottomans was the prevalent opinion in the Western world for centuries and served as propaganda material as late as 1832, when the Greek War of Independence ended. Armenians picked it up from where they had left off, as can be seen in McCarthy’s book. This book trashes the commonly accepted story of relations between Turks and Armenians which should bring down the artificial wall of hostility between them now. Hopefully, a good understanding of their own history between the fighting factions in the Middle East will also bring them together as they too had lived in peace and harmony for hundreds and even thousands of years until others started meddling in their affairs. Otherwise, a truly unexamined history is doomed to unfold itself.

He is unanimously condemned by international historians and genocide scholars around the world.

If you want Ottoman history based on FACT, pick up a book by Turkish authors Fatma Gocek, Ugur Ungor, or Hasan Cemal.

About the Author
Stephen P. Robbins received his Ph.D. from the University of Arizona. He previously worked for Shell Oil Company and Reynolds Metals Company and has taught at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, Concordia University in Montreal, the University of Baltimore, Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, and San Diego State University. He is currently professor emeritus in management at San Diego State. Dr. Robbins s research interests have focused on conflict, power, and politics in organizations, behavioral decision making, and the development of effective interpersonal skills. His articles on these and other topics have appeared in such journals as "Business Horizons," "California Management Review," "Business and Economic Perspectives, International Management, " "Management Review, Canadian Personnel and Industrial Relations," and "The Journal of Management Education." Dr. Robbins is the world s best-selling textbook author in the areas of management and organizational behavior. His books have sold more than 7 million copies and have been translated into 20 languages. His books are currently used at more than 1,500 U.S. colleges and universities, as well as hundreds of schools throughout Canada, Latin America, Australia, New Zealand, Asia, and Europe. David A. Decenzo (Ph.D., West Virginia University) is president of Coastal Carolina University in Conway, South Carolina. He has been at Coastal since 2002 when he took over leadership of the E. Craig Wall Sr. College of Business. As president, Dr. DeCenzo has implemented a comprehensive strategic planning process, ensured fiscal accountability through policy and practice, and promoted assessment and transparency throughout the University. Before joining the Coastal faculty in 2002, he served as director of partnership development in the College of Business and Economics at Towson University in Maryland. He is an experienced industry consultant, corporate trainer, public speaker, and board member. Dr. DeCenzo is the author of numerous textbooks that are used widely at colleges and universities throughout the United States and the world. Dr. DeCenzo and his wife, Terri, have four children: Mark, Meredith, Gabriella, and Natalie, and reside in Pawleys Island, South Carolina. "

Weak effort that should be left in the past.

As a graduate textbook, this volume lacks the necessary depth to challenge students. Worse yet, this book may only be downloaded onto two devices, rendering it much less useful in the publisher's attempt to force students to purchase or rent multiple copies. I'm all for purchasing something that's worth the price, but once I purchase that item, I should be allowed to do with it as I please on my own devices, no matter how many I have registered. Robbins, et. al. need to convince their publisher to join us in the 21st century in their approach to business.

I found this textbook to be extremely essential to passing my Management course. Not only is it informative but I found it to be inspirational and uplifting. Whether you are taking a course in Management or not, this text helps guides you to be a greater leader with the skills to manage yourself and others. Plus it is easy to read with pictures and large font.

Loose leaf text with no binder

Arrived with no missing pages but I wish it had a binder with it. It's definitely a less expensive alternative to a traditional text book. I also liked that I could throw a chapter in a folder and take it with me to work or on the train for reading without lugging a large text book.

I found the test associated with the text publisher are not as closely linked as they could have been. There is a lot of tiring material in here and it gets redundant and cumbersome as you read on.

About the Author
Baird T. Spalding, whose name became legend in metaphysical circles during the first half of the 20th century, played an important part in introducing to the Western world knowledge of the Masters, who are assisting and guiding the destiny of mankind. Born in England, at age four he went to India. At age seventeen he finished the University and went to California where he stayed two years. He then traveled to Heidelberg, Germany and studied for eight years and then returned to California for post-graduate work in Archaeology at Berkeley and Stanford.
After years of working with publisher Douglas DeVorss to write and promote the Life & Teaching series, Spalding died in 1953 in Arizona.

5 Stars! The best set of books I have ever read...and read.

Baird T. Spalding takes you on a wonderful, remarkable journey to meet the Masters and see the Truth they live in their everyday lives. As a Christian, I find these books to be in complete agreement with Jesus's teachings in the Holy Scriptures. Though the Masters are not Christian, they profess that Christ IS the Way. The Masters take off the "religious" hat, and put on true Spirituality. No New Age mumbo jumbo, just timeless Truth. We are Children of the Living God as the Saviour taught, and the Masters teach and exemplify this in their day-to-day living. Spalding's writing is superb. I felt as if I were there on location with him. After reading the Masters, I read the Bible in a whole new light. Christ's teachings come to life in these short, easy-read volumes. I would like to have some contacts and exchange ideas with other readers of these books and perhaps start a discussion group.

Lost in Translation

It seems this book series is translated from French, my guess. I can't find a lot on this author other than some French literature, so I'm going on assumption here. The grammar is lacking some of the polish and emotion that I would expect in a novel of this sort. I think some of the literary devices don't necessarily have direct correlations in English. It's a good story, but the someone clunky style would not allow me to go past the sample (which is sizable -- much larger than any other book I've downloaded).

Ooh, I love this David Fulton guy. You can definitely see why Louisa has got it bad for him! Lots of action in this series, and I have to say, the erotic scenes are particularly well-written and well... let's just say you really see David's erotic side! Great chemistry between the two characters.

An exiciting attacker's combat handbook for chess warriors!!

Rudolph Spielmann's book is a fascinating insight into the thinking that inspires successful attacking play. Spielmann, an Austrian master, was considered of the most ferocious attackers of his days in the 1920's. His style of play is strikingly similar to the celebrated Mikhail Tal. If Alexei Shirov is today considered the descendant of Tal, then Spielmann should be considered his forerunner. Spielmann's philosophy was total distain of material in pursuit of the greater goal of mating the king. His book gives numerous examples of his play and would recommend this book to anyone who loves Tal. The book contains complete games played by Spielmann against some of the leading players of his time and is grouped into thematic chapters. The only slight drawback is the book is in the descriptive notation but this a small price to pay for this frank and personal insight into the mind of an attacking genius.

Spielmann was a great combinative player from the first half of the 20th century. He played against Capablanca, Alekhine, Lasker, Tarrasch, Rubinstein etc. In this fabulous book he explains the foundation of combinative play: deep positional understanding, and not necessarily calculation power. In practical play it is most of the times not possible to calculate all the ramifications of a "real sacrifice" (this is Spielmann's therminology for those sacrifices which do not yield an immediate check mate or recovery of the material sacrificed). In such cases the sacrifice is based on positional understanding, not calculation power. Tal used to play like this; Shirov comes to mind as another example. A classic book. For this price do not think twice: buy it!

This is not another "hacking" manual, but gives ideas about how to think about sacrificing.

Rudolf Spielmann's work is not perfect, but if read in the right frame-of-mind can be an extremely rewarding read.

This is not a manual on the mechanics of kingside attacks, in the vein of Vukovic's "Art of Attack in Chess," or Znosko-Borovsky's "The Art of Chess Combination." Neither is it a tactical workbook, such as Fred Reinfeld's works or Fred Wilson's works or, for that matter, Laszlo Polgar's magnum opus "Chess: 5,334 Problems, Combinations, and Games." Every one of those books/authors mentioned is worth reading, but this is a DIFFERENT KIND of work.

The book that readily comes to mind as being in the same "family" as this work is Tal and Damsky's "Attack with Mikhail Tal," but unlike that (masterpiece!) Spielmann's work does not require a Master's Degree in Attacking Chess! :-)

Now that I've compared "The Art of Sacrifice in Chess" to other types of attacking books you may be thinking of purchasing, let me finally speak about the book itself!

Yes, Spielmann's choice of classification and terminology may be called into question, but that does not in any way detract from the book itself. What Spielmann does in this book better than any other intermediate book I can think of, is reveal HOW THE SACRIFICE AFFECTS THE REMAINING PIECES ON THE ATTACKING AND DEFENDING SIDES! For example, one of his games begins 1.e4 Nf6 2.Nc3 d5 3.e5 Nfd7 and now Spielmann plays 4.e6!? After 4...fxe6, Spielmann brilliantly demonstrates (through his play and especially through the annotations!) how White was able to win the game by constricting the Black forces behind the e-pawns on e7,e6. The line of thinking runs: if there is a pawn on e6 (extra though it may be), the bishop on c8 cannot really come out, which in turn entombs the rook on a8! There are other similar examples of this thought process throughout the book. You will also notice how, for example, minor piece sacrifices in the center suddenly cause the attacking side's rooks and queen to spring to life with decisive force!

Many of the examples in the book are complex, but in nearly all cases you can see Spielmann's THOUGHT PROCESS, and you understand why he made the decisions he made. To me this book has a lot of value, and thank goodness it is a departure from all those insipid Morphy games with "sac, sac, mate" on f7 against an uncastled king.

Enjoyable!!!!!

The series so far has been an exciting ride. I have done some audible and some reading; both work well for this series. The only negtive thing I could say is I am tired of hearing/reading about how they "know this will be the end - they will die" . I so want the "evil" dudes killed faster but the story line is richer with the good/evil struggle as Morgan presents it.

If you lie action, adventure, magic and enjoying the characters maturing before your eyes/ears, this is a good choice.

The good & the not so good

I'm not sure I will continue with this series. While I anxiously read all 4 books, I can't help but feel tired of the "never ending" story. I enjoyed the storyline. But, It has been too long and drawn out. Kyra's character is forever making the wrong decision, of course like that of a young and inexperienced child. You know everything she does will bring some sort of negative consequence. I started skimming the battle scenes because they were too wordy. Don't get me wrong. The author has a fabulous imagination for this fantastical story. This is the first I have read from this author. I just believe it should have been more concise. The editing could have been better. Some characters' names were interchanged from time to time. Sometimes a paragraph would be partially repeated. All in all, I like the story but I'm ready for the end. I'll have to think hard about #5 when it is available. I may not continue with it.

Great read, can't wait for the next book. This one does make you want to strangle Krya and tell her stop wasting you chances when you know what you're supposed to do. I'm going to have to retread all 4 books because they were that good.

About the Author
Robert Van Gulik (1910-67) was a Dutch diplomat and an authority on Chinese history and culture. He drew his plots from the whole body of Chinese literature, especially from the popular detective novels that first appeared in the seventeenth century.

Judge Dee will keep you guessing

One of the most interesting things about Van Gulik's Judge Dee books is that the Judge is usually juggling three or four mysteries at once. Your brain definitely stays awake as he shifts his attention from one to the other. "The Red Pavilion" takes place on "Paradise Island", a town in which the main industry is the selling of pleasure--sort of a Las Vegas of ancient China. Between current murders and murders of the past, the Judge has his hands full, and with only one of his usual four assistants he is a busy guy.
I enjoyed the interesting characters of the various courtesans, bouncers, businessmen, and mysterious beggars no end. His Excellency is not beyond making a guess at a solution and then proving himself wrong, which is quite refreshing in detective novels. If you like detective novels combined with ancient culture, you may well enjoy these books.

When Judge Dee meets Autumn Moon she is wearing a translucent robe. She strolls onto the veranda of the secluded suite of rooms where Dee is staying for night and flirts atrociously with him. Dee remains polite. He has been forced to break his journey at the resort of Paradise Island but he has every intention of going on in the morning.

Then he learns that the suite of rooms, the Red Pavilion, has been the scene of murder in the past. And lately, Lee Lien, a distinguished scholar of a distinguished family, apparently committed suicide there. When Judge Dee returns from a dinner with the local notables, he discovers the body of Autumn Moon on the floor of the locked bedchamber!

Judge Dee was a real magistrate and official of the Tang dynasty. In his fictional series about this great man, Robert Van Gulik searches out notable exploits and tales of the Chinese Imperial system and presents them to modern readers in a form that entertains as well as enlightens. Most of Gulik's Judge Dee stories take place with the magistrate in his district. This one shows Judge Dee on the road, acting as an assessor for a fellow magistrate. The setting is unique in all the Judge Dee books: a pleasure resort where the usual mores and laws are somewhat suspended. The denouement of this fascinating novel brings to mind the adage: What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas!

clever and occasionally humorous mystery

Judge Dee, magistrate of Poo-yang, eagerly heads home after an unpleasant hearing in the capital surrounding some chicanery and illicit sex at a Buddhist monastery in the earlier The Chinese Bell Murders: A Judge Dee Detective Story. Dee finds himself unexpectedly thrust into the role of investigator into an alleged suicide in the pleasure district of Paradise Island in the neighboring district. The contrast between the "anything-goes" attitude of the denizens of Paradise Island and the moralizing, strait-laced Judge Dee sets up quite a few amusing scenes.

Judge Lo Kwan-Choong, the magistrate of the neighboring district of Chin-hwa, returns to add comic spice to The Red Pavilion. He also provides the reason for Dee's need to investigate in the first place. The womanizing sybarite Magistrate Lo first appeared in The Chinese Bell Murders, the second Judge Dee novel released in the United States (although not the second chronologically). As befits the irresponsible and careless Lo, he dashes off from Pleasure Island to the city of Chin-hwa to avoid some unpleasantness, and Lo asks Judge Dee to finish off the investigation into the suicide of a brilliant young scholar named Lee Lien, who had just been appointed a member of the Imperial Academy and had everything to live for. Author Robert van Gulik crafts The Red Pavilion as a locked-door mystery, which, at first, throws Judge Dee off the scent. It's only after yet another murder that Dee realizes that Lee's death was no suicide.

Although resentful at Lo's fecklessness, the long-suffering, meticulous Dee ignores Lo's suggestion that he just sign off on the suicide and looks into that matter. During the several days that Judge Dee and his trusty lieutenant Ma Joong investigate, they not only learn the truth about Lee's death but also resolve the murder of the beautiful but cruel courtesan Autumn Moon and yet another murder committed 30 years earlier. In those two cases, the victims, like Lee, died behind locked doors inside the self-same Red Pavilion. Readers won't guess the murderer until the penultimate chapter.

The Red Pavilion also shows a sweet side to the normally devil-may-care Ma Joong. To say anything more would spoil the novel.

For those new to the series, author Robert van Gulik, a Dutch diplomat, linguist and Asian scholar, relied on a real-life Chinese magistrate during the T'ang Dynasty named Ti Jen-chieh for his Judge Dee novels. Simplifying the magistrate's name to Judge Dee Jen-djieh, van Gulik first introduced the West to Judge Dee in Celebrated Cases of Judge Dee (Dee Goong An) (Detective Stories), first published in 1949 (although not translated into English until 1976).
