The material in this book was first presented as a one-semester course in Relia­ bility Theory and Preventive Maintenance for M.Sc. students of the Industrial Engineering Department of Ben Gurion University in the 1997/98 and 1998/99 academic years. Engineering students are mainly interested in the applied part of this theory. The value of preventive maintenance theory lies in the possibility of its imple­ mentation, which crucially depends on how we handle statistical reliability data. The very nature of the object of reliability theory - system lifetime - makes it extremely difficult to collect large amounts of data. The data available are usu­ ally incomplete, e.g. heavily censored. Thus, the desire to make the course material more applicable led me to include in the course topics such as mod­ eling system lifetime distributions (Chaps. 1,2) and the maximum likelihood techniques for lifetime data processing (Chap. 3). A course in the theory of statistics is aprerequisite for these lectures. Stan­ dard courses usually pay very little attention to the techniques needed for our purpose. A short summary of them is given in Chap. 3, including widely used probability plotting. Chapter 4 describes the most useful and popular models of preventive main­ tenance and replacement. Some practical aspects of applying these models are addressed, such as treating uncertainty in the data, the role of data contamina­ tion and the opportunistic scheduling of maintenance activities.

This modest and well organized book explores detailed case studies of the challenging area devoted to Reliability and Preventive Maintenance for practitioners, researchers and students specializing in Operations Research, Reliability, Quality Control and Logistics. An outstanding feature of the book is detailed numerical solutions to many problems solved with the help of Mathematica software. This makes easy for usage both by the lecturer and by the student. It may be highly recommended not only for the academic level and University libraries, but also for use by practitioners and we hope that the modest price of $74 is worth dealing with such an original and research priceless material, which is a valuable contribution to the fields of reliability and Preventive Maintenance research and studies.

HIghly readable yet dense with theory

Refreshingly well-written and organized. Good graphics and figures. Focuses on the main issues of maintanence strategy, both from a rigorous numerical point of view and a practical point of view. More discussion of general modeling techniques of entire systems would be useful, especially when considering the design phase of a life-cycle cost analysis.

Half way thru and "caught in the middle"..Love it & Hate it

I hate to be party pooper...
I know that Danielle Steel is a fabulous author, and that her books are loved worldwide, and I do think she's an incredible person....
BUT
I just picked up this book, I am still in the middle of it, and I thought I would give my opinion already...
I think its an amazing story, great characters, and very emotional...
but something about the writing is not very intriguing or "different"...
Most of the sentences seem repetitive, like "he never loved her so much..."..."she never looked more beautiful"...."Jane loved him very much and he loved her too"...(I feel like these sentences are in each chapter). A lot of the writing is just predictable and boring; it almost seems like it was written for an elementary school reader...At times I have found myself re-reading sentences and saying "is she kidding ? "..
OK, here's one example
"Her mother looked wide-eyed and alert and beautiful, just like she had before, only thinner, and they were moving to Stinson Beach the next day"
...can someone please tell me how that sentence makes any sense ? ..
I found many of these, as a matter of fact they distracted me from reading all along my subway ride...I wish I had a highliter for each one I found...and for each "She loved him very much" or "She was never happier in her life"...
Another thing I'm not crazy about is how DS always uses the phrase, ".....and he told him just as much"....If you have read this book you might remember...
Another thing...
After Liz and Bernie were married they were trying SO HARD to have a baby. They wished for it when they tossed coins into the Fontana di Trevi on Via Veneto...then a month or 2 later, Liz begins to feel nauseous and exhausted, misses her period (and doesn't realize it), never remembers feeling that horrible....and doesn't think that maybe she's pregnant ! ...it's just too unrealistic at times...
Sure it's fiction, it's a novel, but it's easy to get absorbed into a good book..
This one is too surreal, and it's disappointing in a way...
Redundancy...
In each chapter, someone is going to or coming from an airport...A few times I thought I was re-reading a past chapter...Either Bernie is flying on a business trip, or his parents are coming to see him...
More repetitiveness...
Each time Grandma Ruth comes, she has bought tons and mountains and lots and lots and lots of toys for the kids from "Schwarz...and each time Bernie sees his mother he has a new bag for her or she is wearing a suit or hat that he bought her years before...
There is way too much mention of the department store Wolff's...That store seems to be the saving grace of everything...
Need food ? Wolff's has a gourmet department...
Need a lawyer ? Wolff's has that too !
Whatever Bernie or his family needed was provided by Wolff's. Seems like these 4 people are living in a glass bubble called Wolff's...
It is also annoying to have to hear about every piece of clothing worn by Grandma Ruth, Liz and every other woman in the book, where the oufit was made, what material it was, and how it looked on them....A run-on sentence just to describe an outfit...( I love clothing and shopping but this is a novel, not WOMENS WEAR DAILY)...
Also, I was told in English class in high school NEVER to start a sentence with the word AND, and sure enough DS seems to do that VERY VERY often...
I plan to finish this book, since it's a gripping story, but I am very bored with the writing style.......I will not give up on DS however, I do plan on reading more of her books, (not consecutively - i need a change of writing style)hopefully I don't come across these same bad habits......
I would love to hear if anyone agrees or disagrees with me...send me an email......no offense to anyone, just my honest-to-goodness opinion !
I never thought it was possible to like the story line of a book, but not like how it was written...
I guess it's kind of like what they say about jokes "it's all in the delivery"......

Absolutely Amazing!!!

This book was amazing!!! The things that go through your mind while reading this book are indescribable. This has to be by far the best book I have ever read. After Bernie Fine moves to San Francisco on business and gets his life together it becomes an amazing fairy tale that every girl wishes for but soon after tragedy strikes it all seems to fall apart. But with an excellent ending it all comes together. An important point to this book is how it twisted the norm, it always seems as though it is the women left to pick up their shambled lives while raising their children after dealing with some tragedy, but this book did a fine job of showing that that is not always the case. I truly enjoyed this book and could not put it down after I had started it. Another excellent job done by Danielle Steel.

Hal Leonard Bass Method-Complete Edition: Books 1, 2 and 3

I have been teaching individual bass and guitar lessons for 10 years now after having taught music (band and choir) in the public school system. I'm always on the lookout for better/more thorough/more complete method books to help my students achieve their goals. I have found this method to be very thorough without being boring. The cd accompaniment tracks are great and I use them as the "test"....the students must play along with the track successfully before moving on. If you are considering this book, you are making a good choice.

Great step-by-step learning experince!

I enjoy playing drums, but when a nice bass showed up at the local pawn shop, i splurged. Afterwards, I checked out a few volumes by the "names" in bass, but found them either overly complex, or overly exhaustive in information. Ed Friedland put together the "just right" package.

First off, it does NOT depend on TAB. You start with notes. And even when TAB appears far into the book, it is not necessary as you can still play in notes. And as mentioned below, you get to play "tunes" early one, even if they are very simple. Thus, you get to build a base playing along with the band on the CD.

Everything progresses cleanly. You get pictures of fingerings, diagrams of fingerings, and (early on) numbering of the fingering of notes under the notes themselves. In other words...

This is the book you want if you don't have/can't have a teacher. It won't take you all the way there by itself, but you'll cross a few county lines on the way to the big time!

Beginning bass player

I didn't want to write a "straight out of the box" review. I wanted to actually use the book first. This book was bought back in Dec. 2010 and it is now the end of July 2011. This is by far the BEST beginner book I've seen. What I like most about the method is the fact that although it does teach you tabs, which come later in the book, it teaches you to read music. So, by the time you get to the tabs section, you really (I don't) use them. The 3 cd's that come with the book are invaluable. They really help you with your progress. I use them as a test to move on to the next level. As a side note, I'm in my early 50's and have no desire to be a rock star. I just took the bass up as a hobby. Be that as it may, whatever your goal, you can do a lot worse than this bass method book! I also HIGHLY recommend the use of stretching exercises before and after playing. You don't want to get carpal tunnel syndrome. There are some great exercises to be found on you tube. I hope this was helpful, enjoy.

A de-Nazified meteorite

The canonical version of “The Shooting Star” is my favorite Tintin adventure. The slapstick humor and the, shall we say, Haddockisms are kept down to a minimum. The actual plot takes centre stage, as Tintin and his friends embark on a scientific expedition to the Arctic Sea in order to claim a huge meteorite containing a mysterious metal. The story contains a few science fiction elements, and lampoons both distracted scientists and doomsday prophets (in the Swedish version, the prophet Philippulus is actually called Pythagoras). Naturally, a greedy banker from “Sao Rico”, a certain Mr Bohlwinkel, also wants to lay his hands on the valuable piece of space debris, and does everything in his power to sabotage the legitimate expedition. Parallels to Jules Verne's “The Golden Meteor” have been duly noted.

Unfortunately, “The Shooting Star” is seriously marred by the fact that the original version was published in Nazi-occupied Belgium and contained anti-Semitic propaganda. The greedy banker was named Blumenstein in the original, and his expedition sailed from the United States, a nation the Nazis claimed was controlled by Jews. It also contained other examples of anti-Semitism. Tintin's creator Hergé cleaned up the story after World War II, but that simply made matters worse, since he came across as an opportunist (which he, of course, was).

The de-Nazification of “The Shooting Star” also created a number of anomalies. I always wondered why most characters from the purported Latin American nation of “Sao Rico” look White and have English names. That's because they *were* North Americans in the original version. Bohlwinkel (ex-Blumenstein) still looks pretty “Jewish”, however, and even spouts a red star-like emblem on his tuxedo! Meanwhile, defenders of Hergé has claimed that the original story contains secret anti-Nazi codes, such as the menacing spider being called “fasciata” (compare “fascism”), or the crazy prophet's name Phillipulus (compare Phillip Petáin). I'm not sure if I buy this, and I wonder whether anyone ever noticed at the time?

It's a shame that such a good story has such a colorful background (and, occasionally, foreground), but at least the fate of “The Shooting Star” shows that the Allies won the shooting war…

Great coffee table magazine

Neil has always been one of my favorites. Prolific song writing coupled with high energy performances...The man is a rock god! I really like the idea of a single magazine dedicated to a single musician, even if the coverage is a bit spotty, and subjective listings of "Best Songs", frequently don't mirror my feelings. I have the Jerry Garcia ultimate guide along with the Neil Young version sitting happily on my coffee table for friends to browse through. Looking forward to a Bob Dylan edition!

Learning Spanish basics

I began learning Spanish 16 months ago on a very informal basis, largely due to my changing work environment. I have purchased some instrtuctional CD's and Spanish for Dummies and Spanish Verbs for Dummies. The 'dummies' series does offer information about culture and provides an excellent phonetic reference for correct pronunciation of words. Both were interesting and pragmatic.

This book, [Spanish Verb Tenses] was recommended by Amazon. I read the reviews and found the price to be reasonable enough to try the book. I have found the book to be very user friendly. The concepts and gramatical basics are covered, but the exercises are enjoyable. I have since purchased Ms. Richmond's other two books: one for vocabulary and the other for pronouns. Each have delivered the exceptional discussion of language. They highlight both the similarities between english and spanish as well as the decisive differences. I feel that these books will provide me with skills to be more confident to speak spanish to native speakers in a gramatically correct manner. Thank you--

Spanish Verb Tenses workbook is great!

This workbook is the best spanish aid that I've used. A person just can't communicate with just nouns and adjectives. They need a good working knowledge of verbs. This book takes you through the tenses, and spends 79 pages on just the present tense, working through all the irregulars, stem-changing verbs, etc. There are a total of 226 pages of workbook-type work, then some appendices, spanish-english glossary, and the answer key. The last page is 305. About every 6-7 pages is a paragraph to translate into spanish. It makes a person think. One thing about this book is that even though there is a small english-spanish dictionary in the back, you'll need another bigger dictionary, since many words are not in their dictionary. This is a great investment. I would buy it again, knowing what I know now.

This book is so great!

This book and the other Practice-Makes-Perfect workbook by Dorothy Richmond ("Spanish Pronouns and Prepositions") are the best Spanish books I've ever used. I just got back from 2 years in the Peace Corps in Honduras and I studied these books every day. They REALLY helped me learn more Spanish! In addition to the concise, easy-to-understand instruction sections, there's tons of exercises to do (with the correct answers in the back of the book) and as I did the exercises, I picked up all kinds of things that I'd been wondering how to say. I also liked the verb workbook a lot because it went way beyond the present tense, all the way to the subjunctive uses of "haber" and other more advanced things I really wanted to know. (This book is especially great if you already know some Spanish because you need some vocabulary to do the exercises, unless you don't mind looking up lots of words in the dictionary.) I highly recommend this book!

From my experience in life I have come to know that adults are considered to be with a sound mind, but we all know that doesn't seem to be the case most of the time. Now knowing that this is the kind of spirit dwelling in us, this means you will be able to make rational decisions right? Or should I ask you, why then are you giving the best of yourself and your treasure to that low down thief, Satan. I stand firm in believing that you want the best and desire the best for your life; as well as being treated the best. Being treated as a First Lady, and definitely not the hired help. Remember to not to be so impatient and wait until God sends you your prince charming. You see, when you're rushing and settling for just anything you are like a hungry man. When you are very hungry you will eat things that you normally wouldn't eat or even consider eating. You say no? Well apparently you haven't been very hungry before. Or if a time you're at work, and very hungry and short of time on top of that. What you'll end up doing is rushing to get something out of the vending machine, and if there's nothing except what you don't like in the machine, well that's what you'll get. That's the same in comparison to this; you will rush and end up just accepting anything, and taking what you can get it. And you'll regret it and hopefully it won't be for the rest of your life. So just be still and let God be God; wait on Him. Trust and believe He knows your desires and He will fulfill them.
GOD'S DELAY IS DEFINATELY NOT YOUR DENY

Whenever there is something positive and prosperous absorbed in your spirit, the release of something negative must be done. The Word tells us to, “renew your mind”; In other words, to change your way of thinking, and your whole thinking pattern. We can never advance by living in the past. The past should only be a stepping stone or a learning experience. Never should it be shackles or chains holding us from freedom and liberty. My sisters, you are released “this day”, from any bondage the enemy has tried to make strongholds in your life. This “new day”, I speak increase and life into your spirit, from this moment forth! Enjoy this, and I pray that it will be a blessing to you and whomever you share it with

Great Wisdom; Wonderful Read

There are wonderful messages in this book, and I especially enjoy the fact that it includes many scriptures related to marriage and relationships. While the book is originally geared toward women, the author includes quite a bit of information that would be beneficial to men as well. This is an awesome book for use in women's Bible circles, reading clubs, or even couples ministries. The journal entry spaces at the end of each chapter give space for note taking, which is valuable. As previously stated, there are many awesome messages, and I often found myself highlighting and wanting to make note of a great point. This is a book for single women, engaged women, recently married women, and even women who've been married for many years. Everyone can gain something in the reading of this information. I quite enjoyed this read and would (HAVE) recommend it to others.

This book took me to a better understanding of myself. I would highly recommend this book to every woman and young lady out there. I will give this book to my daughter so she learns what I didn't when I was her age, with the hope she doesn't make my mistakes.

Before my last relationship blew up in my face. I loved this book. It opened up my eyes to the the mistakes I've made with the men I let into my life. The red flags I saw and questioned. It has opened my eyes to who I am and how special I am. How I need to be picky about who I cast my pearls to. I just bought this book as a gift to my best friend.

A gutwrenching and inspiring story of the son of Ron Reagan

Michael Reagan with brutal honesty, and a whole lot guts, tells the gutwrenching but inspiring story of his much traveled life. From living a childhood that included such traumatic experiences as: being ridiculed for being adopted, being brutally molested by a camp councellor, having his parents divorce,and being constantly switched to different boarding schools,Michael grew up feeling very low about himself, and contemplated suicide on several occasions. His young adulthood was marred by consusion and self destructive behavior. While in his twenties Michael racked up staggering debt, had a failed marriage, and was dogged by a failure to hold down a steady job. While the young Michael was not extemly proud of his irresponsible lifestyle he had no great desire to reform himself because his parents, namely his mother, would always bail him out. It was in meeting his current wife Colleen that Michael experienced the turning point of his life. Colleen quickly let it be known that Michael's lifestyle was unaccaptable, and would have to be ended if they were to be together. This was to be Michael's ephinany, and it started the turnaround that allowed him to exorcise the deamons of his past, live a blessed, and honest life, and fully reconcile with his father. This book is sure to be an inspiration to anyone who has lived a trying life, and will provide valuable lessons to anyone who feels as though they are alone and that their life is spinning out of control.

A great book for the intelligent reader

My impressions of this book may seem somewhat surprising. I bought it primarily to find out why Michael Reagan was so distant from his father and so detached from the broader Reagan family, and yet seems to be the embodiment of Ronald Reagan's political philosophy. What I got, instead, was a more important story and much more than that. I came to see this not so much as the story of Michael Reagan, but more as the classic example of a truly dysfunctional family. To me, it became the story of love and affection gone wrong. It was populated with family members who obviously cared about each other but seldom saw things the same way. The players always seemed to talk past each other and, no matter what they tried; they continually worked at cross purposes. I couldn't help but wonder: how many other American families act in just this same way and how many adopted children shared Michael's fears and feelings? This book isn't just about Michael Reagan. It is about life in America and the inner workings of a classically dysfunctional family.

Caught between two families, the Reagans and Jane Wyman, but feeling that he doesn't belong to either one, Michael Reagan takes the reader through a gut wrenching childhood of presumed privilege which often works against him and which is filled with thoughts of loneliness, unworthiness, and the constant fear of not being wanted; all as seen through the eyes of a child. One can only wonder how many other adopted children have shared these feelings. Then, even when he begins to feel that he might belong and that he is really wanted, he is once again put down. Brought home from boarding school and expecting his own room he is instead made to sleep on the couch so a servant can have a room of her own. Then it's back to boarding school; with more loneliness and fear.

To make matters worse, Michael is molested as a child and the child molester goes so far as to take nude pictures of him. This brings further shame, a sense of unworthiness, fear of being a homosexual, and a long-standing fear that he will be exposed bringing shame to his family. It might have helped if he had been able to tell someone, but how many children would be able to do that. Instead, he lived with it untold until this book was written.

In looking at all the characters in this book it seems impossible to say who, if anyone, was really at fault, or if they all just got caught up in something over which they had no control. In my view, though, by sharing his story with such brutal honesty, Michael Reagan has done a service not only to himself, but to his family and to the country at large. I've always admired him. I admire him even more after reading this biography. As a matter of fact, I couldn't put it down...

Perfect Guide from Pre-Purchase Consideration to Post-Purchase Evaluation

As mentioned before, the author is very resourceful and quick to respond to questions. After browsing through the chapters and reviewing some of the additional teacher resources (designed for classroom use), I found the book to very highly consistent with professional standards of successful implementation. She walks through and explains how to properly conduct many of the essential, yet often overlooked stages of process planning, vendor selection, and post-implementation evaluation. For being just under 200 pages, this is about as comprehensive as you'll find.

Modern ERP is a great book for ERP newcomers looking to understand the implications of ERP as well as professional / experienced ERP salespeople, consultants, or system administrators looking to refine their skills and knowledge base.

This book gives a good overview for what ERP is standing for. Beginning from the basics till a more advanced level. I am using this book in addition of following classes about ERP. This book gives good insight.
