Another Great Read from Andrew Ferebee!

• An easy-to-follow 2 part process that perfectly aligns with the phases of a break-up.
• Closure doesn’t happen overnight. That’s why I love the 25 step layout that provides small steps to make the break-up as painless as possible.
• A reminder that you were awesome before you started dating her and you will be awesome after a break-up!
• Very clear cut language with no fluff.

• The only con is the break-up itself but it’s nothing you can’t handle with the help of this guide!

Had A Recent Breakup? Keep Calm And Read This Review...

I've had a bad breakup (along with other depressing events within the same timeframe) in the past. It's a difficult thing to go through and honestly, just reading a book might be hard for you to do. BUT...

Reading this book could also be the best thing for you to do, even if it's hard. It's under 100 pages so that's a plus for you too.

You might have to take it slow, but as long as you get it done and internalize what you read you'll be good. Oh, and don't forget to act on the advice!

Breakups can set you back in life so the sooner you recover the better...

Better than seeing a therapist

Useful and uplifting. Well written. Ferebee gets to the point. He is empathetic, motivational, and straight on providing a clear method for recovering and thriving after a break up. I highly recommend it to anyone going through a rough patch. I'm currently going through a divorce. This book has been great because it gives you a strategy. He asserts that your break up was for the best, and he'll tell you why. He'll bring you into a healthy mindset where you can be certain the best part of your life is yet to come. And once you are healed from the split, once you get back on your feet, you will want to read his first book: The Dating Playbook for Men.

A Must Read for Manson AND American History

This book was excellent! It went way beyond my expectations. This is like a lesson in 1950s-1970s, even some 80s, American history, and how Manson & the Family wove themselves into the culture in the 60s. The main Family members, even many other people who were mere aquaintances w/Manson & knew nothing of his past, have a biography in this book. I've read Helter Skelter many times, & while I have no complaints about it, this book is different from & exceeds the info in that book. This is a recent book, w/things that weren't known back when HS was written. Very well-researched, a must read. It is not like HS, in that it is not so much about the Tate & LaBianca murder trials; instead it is a thorough look into every aspect of Manson- his family & their lives, Manson growing up, going to CA, a bio of the girls involved. I felt like I lived the story... like I followed along.
Even if you aren't too interested in Manson, this book is a crucial look into aspects of America's past: our prison system, dysfunction of families, crime & punishment (& lack thereof), civil rights era, African American & Muslims in America (ways they fought discrimination), drug culture, 60s & 70s politics, San Francisco social history, LA music scene & social history, cults, gangs, Vietnam War, sexual culture of the 60s, psychology & sociology, music (rock) history, history of the Beatles & Beach Boys, & more.
I have a BA in history, & I highly suggest this book for any American history professor for their students to read. I would've gotten much more out of this book for the time periods involved, than many US history books I had to read. Would be helpful also in criminology, sociology, pysch., mental illness, drug history, US politics, & so much more.

A very good and detailed account of Charles Manson. There are on problems with the Kindle version like I've experienced with other books. If you really want to read a comprehensive book about the Charles Manson, his life and his families, both his real and murderous one.

Ok, but not as good as I expected

If you have read "Helter Skelter" (and who hasn't by now?) this book does an okay job of fleshing out the story. The tale of Charlie's early life as a delinquent kid and petty criminal is recounted in detail, including family photos and interviews with family members who lived with him and paint a picture of a scary little creep. While the author is to be commended for tracking down these interviewees, this section of the book drags. Charlie gets out of some institution, does ok for a short while, does something else stupid, goes back in. Ho hum.

The book picks up a bit when it gets into the building of the Family and the background of Manson's contacts with Beach Boy Dennis Wilson and producer Terry Melcher. The author scores with extensive material from LA scenester Gregg Jakobson who was close friends with Wilson and Melcher. However, the trial portion doesn't add much to Bugliosi's past account. I would have also liked more background on some of the family members ( there's a ton of discussion of Ruth Ann Morehouse but nothing on Nancy Pitman) and more details on what happened to each of them after the trial. The book is so thick I was expecting to get all of this as well as more photos. Instead a lot of this book is just rehash.

Ron Suskind won the Pulitzer Prize for feature writing in 1995 for his stories on Cedric Jennings, a talented black teenager struggling to succeed in one of the worst public high schools in Washington, D.C. Suskind has expanded those features into a full-length nonfiction narrative, following Jennings beyond his high-school graduation to Brown University, and in the tradition of Leon Dash's Rosa Lee and Alex Kotlowitz's There Are No Children Here, delivers a compelling story on the struggles of inner-city life in modern America. While it appears to have a happy ending (with Jennings earning a B average in his sophomore year), A Hope in the Unseen is not without a few caveats (at times, Jennings feels profoundly alienated from his white peers). Trite as it may sound to say, this book teaches a lesson about the virtue of perseverance, and it's definitely worth reading. --John J. Miller

YA-Cedric Jennings is the illegitimate son of an off-and-on drug dealer/ex-con and a hardworking, badly paid mother; it is her single-minded vision to have the boy escape the mean ghetto streets unscathed. Cedric has listened to her and is, as the book opens, an A student at a run-down, dispirited Washington, DC, high school, where he treads a thin line between being tagged a nerd and being beaten by gang leaders. Suskind, a Wall Street Journal reporter, follows the African-American youth through his last two years of high school and freshman year at Brown University. Inspirational sermons at a Pentecostal church, guidance from his mother, a love of black music and singing, and a refuge in the logic of math combine with the young man's determination and faith in the future to keep him focused on his goal of a topflight college education. Despite many low moments and setbacks, Jennings's story is one of triumph within both cultures, black and white, which together and separately put tremendous obstacles in his path out of the inner city. It is a privilege and an inspiration for readers to accompany Cedric on part of his long, difficult journey to maturity. Suskind uses his reporter's skills brilliantly, portraying Cedric's outer and inner life and making an eloquent though unstated plea for affirmative action. Essential reading that provides some small hope for our social ills.

An Extraordinary Experience

A remarkable work of non-fiction by a journalist who followed an inner city kid in DC for his last 18 months of high school and his first year at Brown (the first graduate of his school to attend an Ivy League college). At a basic level, it is an illuminating and entertaining account of life in a part of our society that is largely inaccessible and incomprehensible to those who are not in it. But there is much more to it than that. The book provides compelling descriptions of the thoughts and feelings of a cast of real characters including:
(1) Cedric, the protagonist: a sincere and diligent - if sometimes a bit prickly - young black kid who wrestles with conflicts between desire to achieve vs. desire to fit in; his childhood faith vs. inner city culture of sex and drugs; his childhood faith vs. the more sophisticated culture of experimental skepticism at the University; loyalty and affection for his family vs. the aloof individualism characterizing most young Americans.
(2) Cedric's mother: flawed but heroic; a fierce advocate for her son; an unbending force for faith and morality in his life.
(3) Cedric's absentee father: a dynamic personality, but caught in the trap of drug use as he goes in and out of prison and relationships; alternatingly wracked by guilt and soothing himself with rationalization; struggling to hold on to his tenuous relationship with his son.
(4) the minister: a complex character who gives stirring sermons imploring his impoverished flock to shun the moral evils around them and show their devotion by contributing their last farthings - which he uses in part to purchase his Cadillac; his true commitment to his flock is put to the test at the end of the book when Cedric's mother is faced with the prospect of losing everything in a forced eviction, which the minister alone has the wherewithal to prevent.
(5) the advantaged black kids he meets at Brown: their prep school backgrounds and easy familiarity with white culture set them apart from Cedric, but he shares with them other cultural inclinations and references.
(6) his upper-middle class white roommate from Marblehead: a congenial kid who thinks he has life pretty well figured out and prides himself on being able to get along with anyone, but who becomes increasingly confused and hostile after a series of conflicts and miscommunications with Cedric.
For me, Suskind's use of an omniscient narrator to tell the story succeeds - enabling him to weave insights gleaned from multiple sources into a fully informed story. No memoir of an individual participant could achieve that breadth of perspective. It works because his research is so thorough, and the point of view of each character portrayed with sympathy and respect.
All in all, extremely compelling stuff. Nothing short of amazing for something this insightful and rich to come from the pen of a white Jewish guy from out of town. In the afterword, the author comments quite movingly on how meaningful his personal relationships with Cedric and his mother had become to him. They clearly opened their souls. The result is a remarkable portrait of a family that is at once flawed and heroic, endowed with modest resources (and even capabilities) but who nevertheless reach for uncommon achievement; a family uplifted by faith in the face of great and continuing hardship. Very inspiring.

A bittersweet read...excellent nonetheless

I rated this book 4 stars for Suskind's writing style. The main character,Cedric Jennings, well, he should get 6 stars for tenacity alone (as should his mother, Barbara). This was an eye-opening book, especially for someone like myself who lives in a country setting far away from inner-city strife and hardship. Cedric endures the taunts and ostracism of his inner-city high school peers because he is bright, motivated, and interested in learning. (His mother's infleunce should not be underestimated here, nor should Cedric's faith and the support of his church.) He succeeds beyond all odds in getting accepted to Brown University, only to learn that it's very difficult to fit in and be understood there as well. Poor Cedric doesn't seem to fit in anywhere he goes and yet, he "stays the course" in spite of a mulitude of reasons why he should not. What a wonderful triumph and inspriration his story is. I'd highly recommend it- particularly to non-African American readers who most likely don't have clue what it takes to get out of the ghetto- really. This- "just go out and get a job" mentality we "majority" folks spout needs to be blown up. Read this story and you'll see what real inner-city people are up against. It may change the way you view things and may even inspire you to want to do something about the way things are.

required reading: hope and despair in American education

Every American with any responsibility for educa- tion of any kind should read this book, and every employer. Most of all, white people who think racism is over, that blacks get all the breaks, should read this book. It is a powerful story of one young man, backed by a mother and other family with strong wills and belief in education, over- came the profound disadvantages that apply to most inner-city minority children and made it to a selective, Ivy League School. The young man has the qualities needed to succeed at Brown, but he must work incredibly hard, harder than most people are willing to do, to overcome the damage done to him by his poor schooling and his surrounding anti-intellectual, anti-educational achievement subculture. I see this as a searing indictment of the neglect of public schools that serve, or rather disserve, black children, as well as the decades-long neglect that has led to the anti-achievement values of so many of those children. Cedric Jennings is an example of hope, but overall, the story is depressing, and tells the reader that without true and massive commitment to schools, and to children, setting aside petty power squabbles, more generations of children will be lost to America. The chapters describing Cedric's experiences in high school, the days filled with sheer physical fear of other students who viewed him with contempt because he was smart and made good grades, who tried to drag him down to their level, are enough to cause this reader, a graduate of a middle-class, academically-oriented high school 30 yrs ago, where violence in the school day was just unheard of, to read in deep despair. This book is an all too-clear exposition of the depth of the division between middle-class white and poor black that has developed in the last few decades. I hope that state legislative and congressional leadership will read this and ponder its meaning.

Paintings like Primavera were, in their Romanesque neopaganism, hard to reconcile with a Catholic culture, but Botticelli deflected criticism with claims of quasi-religious symbolism. Still, Primavera seems luxuriantly anti-Christian, with its gods and goddesses and Graces celebrating the coming of spring. Certainly the work was worthy of the extensive restoration given it recently by a team of Italians, headed by author Baldini, that used all that the modern science of restoration has to offer. The book goes into those techniques in detail, with reproductions of x-rays, canvas-surface cross-sections, macrophotographs, and striking compare-and-contrast pictures. All is not technical; there are essays on Botticelli the man and painter, and a section called "Interpretations of the Painting."

Great Book on Designing Electronic Circuits

The book is written for M.I.T. physicists and other scientists who need to design their own test equipment. Thus it is not a cookbook, but it is very practical and goal-oriented. It discusses many standard circuits and describes exactly how and why they work, jumping right into methods used to analyze them (KVL, KCL, Norton and Thevenin equivalences).

As an example of the clear approach to circuit analysis, it starts with circuits that use op-amps because they are easy to understand (i.e., as black boxes). (It also includes their real-world limitations and manufacturer's specifications.) Only later does it describe (and analyze) transistor circuits. Of course, many more circuits (e.g., CMOS, digital) are described (and analyzed), but the important point is it gives you the tools to analyze correctly the circuits for yourself.

If you like being able to understand precisely what is going on, and don't want to be babied, THIS IS THE BOOK.

Thus, this book can be used as a textbook for an introductory first course in electrical engineering, as a textbook for one-semester "Electronics for Scientists and Engineers" survey course, or as a self-study primer for the professional scientist or engineer who needs additional background in the theory and practice of electronics.

Brian Sibley is the author of the BBC radio dramatization of The Lord of the Rings as well as of several of Tolkien’s short novels collected under the title Tales from the Perilous Realm. His books include Chicken Run: Hatching the Movie, Cracking Animation, The Disney Studio Story, The Land of Narnia, Shadowlands, and Three Cheers for Pooh, as well as the text accompanying three maps by John Howe based on Tolkien’s The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion.

Weighty and worthy

The book is on the shelves in New Zealand right now. It's a remarkable journey he has made, from struggling apprentice printer to mogul.

The book, like his movies, is long, and rewarding for it. The emphasis is more on pre-LOTR work and life, and it really focuses on the movies - no business or personal exposes here.

Three things struck me:

The first is his overwhelming passion for movies - passion that led him to just do it, rather than learn first by going to university. The results speak volumes, and he is in good company with this approach.

The second is that he is a leader with an ability to gather large amounts of people around him - from the first movie made with a bunch of mates on weekends, to LOTR with over 24,000 kiwis involved.

And the third is that he is an astute businessman - the book only hints at this, but it is clear from the continuous improvement in his Film Commission submissions, and the improvement in the deals struck with New line and Universal.

Read it.

"No" means nothing to Peter Jackson

Picked up this biography years ago and have read it cover to cover twice.

It's an incredibly inspiring story. Peter's perseverance is quite incredible. He knew what he wanted to do with his life, and just went ahead and bloody did it!

It covers his life in great detail - particularly his early career where most biographers wouldn't bother to thoroughly explore. However some more photos from this era would be great.

FANTASTIC read! (Not for everyone, though...)

Overwhelming "take home" from reading this book: Peter Jackson is an ultra-focused, driven, creative person who loves movies, and wants to make them the way HE wants. He will not be deterred in any way from what he wants to do.

OK-who is this book NOT for?

While this book is a biography, it has an extremely specific/narrow focus on his professional career. I mention this because this book is so focused on this one aspect of Peter Jackson's life, that if you are looking for something else than what this book focuses on, you probably won't be interested in this book. Also, if you are only interested in Peter Jackson's work on LOTR and, to a lesser extent, King Kong (forget the Hobbit movies, this book came out about 10 years ago-WELL before the Hobbit movies, in their current iteration, were even "on the radar"...), you won't find what you're looking for until about the last third of the book. The first two thirds of the book focus on his early work that very few people have seen, and covers a great deal of his early "splatter" movies. I've read plenty of biographies of people that are "sprawling" and spend equal times recounting a person's personal life as well as whatever aspect of their life they are famous for. If you are looking for a lot about the "man behind the world-famous director", this book won't DIRECTLY give you that insight. INDIRECTLY you learn a lot about Peter Jackson as a person, but only what you can glean through his actions with respect to his job, not through any "personal" stories in the book, because there really aren't any.

While the beginning of the book does briefly go through Peter Jackson's life as a kid, there are not a lot of personal anecdotes-the majority of things shared from his early days as a kid revolve around the way his obviously-loving parents supported his dreams of becoming a film maker (going so far as to build a no-frills, yet substantial, addition of a built-in garage to their house for him to have a working space as an aspiring special effects person/movie maker.

A GREAT deal of time is spent showing the "business" and "politics" of how movies get made in Hollywood. While Peter Jackson says throughout the book how much he detests these facets of film making, he had to deal with it quite a bit in the early years of his career as he was constantly struggling to find financial backing for his films. As I said, the book is ultra-focused on his professional career, so a great deal of the book covers correspondence back and forth between Peter Jackson and the New Zealand film commission-a national entity charged with strategically funding promising New Zealand film makers. There are TONS of excerpts of letters back and forth that highlight Peter Jackson's humble, yet focused, unapologetic approach to doing whatever he needed to do in order to get his movies made.

While the book never "bogs down" with data/financials in the depiction of the intricacies of movie making, it does provide enough in-depth discussion of the way movies are made so that it felt like the introduction to a college course about film making.

If you are like me and enjoy immensely the behind the scenes footage that was included with the LOTR and King Kong extended edition DVD movies, you will find plenty of that type of material in this book. Those items are covered more in-depth in the DVD's since they can use visuals to accompany the interviews, but the thought process/design considerations get a good amount of coverage in this book.

I found this book to be inspirational not so much because I am a lover of Peter Jackson's LOTR and King Kong movies (which I am a HUGE fan of), but because of what came through LOUD AND CLEAR throughout the entire book:

a) He is a humble, unassuming man who is absolutely passionate about film making;
b) He is FIERCELY loyal to New Zealand and the people with whom he works-the same people follow him from project to project;
c) His genuinely friendly, calm, funny nature and commitment to the work make him a charismatic leader who gets people behind the scenes, and on screen, to give more of themselves than they would have otherwise agreed to;
d) He has a youthful/kid-like exuberance for what he does and has clearly created the life for himself that he always wanted!

Very interesting book especially for individuals interested in life after WW II. This spans from a New Jersey debut party to cattle ranching in Arizona. The author still lives in Tucson and rides her bike on the bike path along the wash.

Motivational with Helpful Tips - Not an Epiphany on Dating

I'll preface this by saying the few dating/relationship books I've flipped through or read descriptions for often come across as very condescending to women. This is especially true if meant to unveil the "male mind" and give it to us straight - the "ugly truth" type of stuff. They make women feel bad for being women. You come away from just one little paragraph feeling like men essentially don't like women (beyond the physical). We're told we need to be more feminine, but also think like men, less clingy, but not too independent - etc. Here is a book which focuses less on how women need to change their nature, needs, desires, etc, as if we're hopelessly incompatible with men by nature, and instead it focuses on social skills & positive thinking modes for attracting & developing relationships with compatible men we actually like & who are worth OUR time & energy.

None of this is earth-shattering, mind-blowing secrets that will give you some epiphany on love & life. Instead, it reads like common sense, the kind many of us missed the memo on, so that it's not so "common" after all.

This book doesn't insult your intelligence, berate you for being a woman, tell you that you have to compromise your values, or leave with some sick feeling that manipulation of men & dishonesty with your own feelings/needs is the "secret".

The explanations of male thinking is also not "boys will be boys" trash that insists sexist and misogynistic behaviors are simply "biological" for men & have to be tolerated by women. Instead of making excuses, the author manages to be honest & fair in describing common male mindsets & how & why certain negative attitudes/behaviors are triggered (much as stereotypical female negative behaviors can be triggered by crappy moves on a guys' part). Since a relationship is a dynamic, it's only fair to adjust what you can control - yourself. So you learn very subtle methods to hone your social & dating skill to basically COMMUNICATE in a way that men in general will grasp correctly.

This is why the book had some good advice & was worth the read - the basic idea is how to communicate who you are, how you feel, and what you expect accurately & in a way that is understood by men. So it's not about changing who you are so much as really communicating it more clearly. If you're the kind of girl whose friends & family & co-workers wonder why you're single because they think you're the bees knees, but for someone reason men you meet/briefly date aren't valuing you the same way, then this might be a helpful read. You're probably not sending the signals which communicate who YOU are correctly; you're leaving false & bad impressions. So the book is really about being MORE yourself with communication that others understand & which creates the desired effect.

A book which is founded on ideas about good communication & keeping integrity is one whose advice I feel I can trust & recommend. It has a "win-win" approach that doesn't degrade men or women - how to get what you desire/need while giving someone else what they desire/need too. Building mutually satisfying relationships is the goal, not manipulating your dream man into marrying you (blech - what an idea!).

I appreciate that this book is about subtle nuances too. Often we don't know what we do wrong because it's not anything big but a subtle signal, and we don't know why our positive signals are ignored & that's because they are TOO subtle. This advice rang true because I've noted men in general communicate more with action & are generally MORE sensitive than women, meaning they need LOUDER positive signals & SOFTER negative ones. The author refers to this as the "fragile male ego" which is really SENSITIVITY.

It also rang true that we tend to attract someone when not interested in them because we're being our authentic selves - so how do we replicate that comfortable inner state & natural outer state so we can be our best, authentic selves when interacting with someone we are attracted to? How can we communicate that quickly, when we may have a few hours, minutes, seconds even to inspire a guy to pursue us? This book gives basic tips on how to do that.

I emphasize this book is very basic. Do not expect an epiphany. A lot of it may feel like reminders of things you know, deep down, but often forget or even compromise consciously.

A downside: the book directs you to online videos for more "secrets" which are really just teasers which lead you to another video they want you to pay for. I can see this as being an endless goose chase designed to keep you hooked & shelling out money while learning very little. I'd have more respect for the author & brand if they took a less scam-like approach. The video they want you to buy has a long intro to sell it which does the classic "play on women's insecurities & promise grand secrets to solve all of their romance problems in a matter of days" approach, one which many dating gurus do. I find it borderline insulting & I naturally expect it to under-deliver with super obvious "insight" repeated ad nauseam just as the rest seem to. This approach is unfortunate & detracts from a brand that has the potential to be more positive & actually useful, as opposed to the insulting junk I described at the outset.

So don't expect too much & don't shell out a lot of money. There are basic principles here which are useful as reminders & to polish your social & dating skills, but no more than that.

I have heard Matthew Hussey speak on the radio and I was looking forward to reading his book, bu I was dissapointed to learn that after every chapter I had to sign in to the websiteand become a paid member in order to look t th video that accompanied each chapter......I felt thi was more of a pay as you go long "help book" than anyhing else.......I was extremely dissapointed and expected more from the author.......

First, get a million dollars; now---

This book's approach reminds me of that old Steve Martin comedy bit, "How you can have one MILLION dollars, and NEVER pay taxes...first, get a million dollars. Now---"

The book is described as providing dating tips that still let *you* be *you*, and don't require any gamesmanship to meet and keep a quality man; neither claim turns out to be true. In a nutshell, the book's how-to can be boiled down to this:

1. Get an amazing, irresistible life.

2. Be an amazing, irresistible person.

3. Stop being insecure.

4. Chat and flirt with everything that moves, employing these specific strategies, types of come-ons, text messages and actions (which may totally seem like gamesmanship and manipulation, but trust the author, it's not).

Follow those four simple steps and success is assured. Here's an actual excerpt from the book---I'm not kidding. If you're drinking anything, put the cup down *now* or your keyboard will be drenched in a few seconds:

"The reason a guy gets hooked on one woman is not because she is *just sexy*, or *just playful*, or *just certain*, or *just feminine*, or *just bursting with integrity*, but because she possesses a unique combination of traits: the girl who is warm, has integrity, and can charm his family, then rips his clothes off in the bedroom and is a sexual goddess; the girl who is playful with his friends, can debate politics like a pro, but knows how to enjoy a lazy Sunday watching movies and eating pizza; the girl who is independent, kicks ass out in the world, but is feminine and loving with her man. Women like this cause an alarm to go off inside a guy's head and heart. Keep her, he thinks. This one's amazing!"

...and if she existed as a real person, she wouldn't be reading this book. I could just as easily advise guys seeking dating advice:

"The reason a woman gets hooked on one man is not because he is just sexy, or just playful, or just certain, or just masculine, or just bursting with integrity, but because he possesses a unique combination of traits: the man who is warm, has integrity, and can charm her family, then rips her clothes off in the bedroom and is a sexual god who's willing to invest all the time she needs in foreplay; the man who is respectful with her friends, can fix things around the house and in the garage like a pro, but knows how to enjoy a lazy Sunday at the museum or craft fair; the guy who is independent, kicks ass out in the world, but is gentle and loving with his woman and lavishes attention on her. Men like this cause an alarm to go off inside a woman's head and heart. He's just a character in a romance novel, she thinks. Be more realistic!"
