About the Author
Dr. Parker is the director for AgrowKnowledge, the National Center for Agriscience and Technology Education, a project funded by the National Science Foundation. The former division director at the College of Southern Idaho, he worked in agriculture, information technology, drafting, and electronics, and taught computer, agriculture, and writing classes. He is the 2008 recipient of the N.A.C.T.A. (National American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture) Distinguished Educator Award, and the 2010 recipient of the N.A.C.T.A. Murray Brown Leadership Award. Dr. Parker has authored several Delmar,Cengage textbooks (Plant & Soil Science, Aquaculture Science, Introduction to Plant Science, and Introduction to Food Science, and others), and serves as Editor of the N.A.C.T.A. Journal. He earned his undergraduate degree from Brigham Young University, a Ph.D. in Reproductive Physiology from Iowa State University, and completed post-doctoral work at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, and the University of Wyoming, Laramie.

Equine Science

I bought this book for my 17 year old daughter to supplement her equine mentorship program for homeschooling. What an outstanding textbook. Very well organized and attractive photos. Can easily be used for about 8th grade through 12th grade. The only downside is that there are no answers to the questions at the end of the chapters and no teacher's guide. This is definitely a textbook format and we both love the book. I have been homeschooling for 16 years and this is one of the best I have seen in a long time. You won't be sorry you bought it.

This book is fantastic Colorado State University is now requiring it for their Intro to Equine Science class. That says a lot since CSU has the best Equine Science program in the country. (plus buying it on Amazon is cheaper than the book store even with over night shipping)

What do you want to be when you grow up? It’s a question we are all asked as little girls, and we are encouraged to dream big. Fortunately, today, we can be ballerinas, astronauts, doctors, lawyers, executives, and presidents. But no one ever asks you “how” you’re going to get there. No one ever tells you how to overcome the self-sabotaging behaviors that get in your way, kill your confidence, and destroy your dreams. Until now.

I may not be an official card-carrying, bra-burning type of feminist, but I believe with every fiber of my being that women are powerful beyond measure, and I have dedicated my career to helping women realize and reach their full professional potential.

As a career coach for more than 20 years, I have worked with and listened to hundreds of women share their stories, their challenges, and their insecurities. I recognize that not only are there external obstacles to a woman’s success―such as women only making $0.77 on the dollar, the proverbial “glass ceiling”, and the inequities that exist in traditionally male-dominated industries―but there are also internal, self-imposed barriers to overcome. Women unknowingly and unintentionally hold themselves back by engaging in sinful, career-limiting, self-sabotaging behavior.

The truth is that, as women, we already have so much in our favor. We have the raw materials and a solid foundation composed of intuition, compassion, intelligence, and drive. However, we can also be our own worst enemies.

I’ll be the first one to admit that sinful behavior can be fun and indulgent, but it can also sabotage your career if you’re not careful. As professional women, we commit Deadly Sins every day without even knowing it―and, without realizing the damaging consequences.

Here’s some good news...despite the description Deadly Sins, none of these behaviors represent permanently debilitating or fatal conditions. Unlike personality, which we know forms by the time we celebrate our fifth birthdays, behavior is learned. And, because it is learned, it can be unlearned. Patterns of thinking can be modified. And, with practice and patience, new behaviors and beliefs can pave new paths to success.

If only we all had this book when we first started working!

I loved reading Woman Up! It was really well written with so much great advice and funny stories -- things you can imagine happening to any of us. I really wish I had had this book when I first started out -- I would have avoided quite a few painful mistakes.

I highly recommend it not only to those just starting out in their careers, but anyone wanting to get ahead by doing it the right way. I'm ordering several copies as gifts.

Woman Up is a long overdue book for anyone who want to be successful in their chosen career. It is head and shoulders above any other book on the market dealing with the subject of women in the workplace. You can hear and feel the passion Aimee has for wanting to empower women to be as successful as they can be. Her voice is authentic; throughout the book there are examples from her own life, from her successful clients with concrete, practical steps that can be taken to overcome the myriad of obstacles woman face as the try to crack the glass ceiling.

Very practical advice that anyone can use

This book is like having years of incredible career coaching all bundled into one handy book you can carry around in your purse. I've bought several issues for friends, as it's a great gift to give to someone else who may be struggling in their career or hoping to advance. About the Author
Keith Bradley is Eli J. and Helen Shaheen Professor of Classics at the University of Notre Dame. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, and held a Killam Research Fellowship in Canada during 1996-1998. He is also the author of Discovering the Roman Family: Studies in Roman Social History (1991) and Slavery and Society at Rome (1994).

Paul Cartledge is A. G. Leventis Professor of Greek Culture at Cambridge University and a Fellow of Clare College. He has published extensively on Greek history over several decades, including The Cambridge Illustrated History of Ancient Greece (Cambridge 1997, new edition 2002), Alexander the Great: The Hunt for a New Past (2004, revised edition 2005), and most recently Ancient Greek Political Thought in Practice (Cambridge, 2009).

I have read only one chapter of this book, but it is clearly a most important collection of scholarly works on this very important subject

However, its price is totally outrageous. Cambridge should cut the hardback price to about $50, and offer a well bound paperback for $25. Do not be greedy, Cambridge!

In her introduction, Emshwiller (The Secret City) says, "I've never known quite what to call my writing." Readers of this offbeat collection of more than 80 short stories spanning nearly five decades might apply labels such as murder mystery, hard science fiction, magical realism, and narrative nonfiction. 1954's "Built for Pleasure" anticipates The Stepford Wives by decades, but is followed by two tales with similar premises, diluting its impact. The transition from mail-order wives to feminist writings, including musings on female genitalia and a story accompanied by drawings of breasts in profile, is abrupt and jarring. The contents are arranged chronologically and unfortunately bereft of authorial notes that might bring some order to the chaos. SF fans may want to skip straight to the moving Nebula-winning "Creature" and otherwise select their own "best of Carol Emshwiller" from this overly comprehensive collection. (Apr.)

About the Author
Carol Emshwiller has been awarded a National Endowment for the Arts grant and a Pushcart Prize. She has received the Philip K. Dick, Hugo, and Nebula awards for her novels and short stories, which include Carmen Dog, Mister Boots, The Mount, The Secret City, and The Start of the End of It All. Her stories have appeared in McSweeney's, Omni, and The Voice Literary Supplement. She lives in New York City.

Too literary for me, but you know your own taste

I've rated this a 3-stars although I would prefer not to rate it at all, since my reaction is largely a matter of taste. Two people on LibraryThing gave it 5-star ratings, but no reviews.

One of the most haunting stories that I ever read was written by Carol Emshwiller, Unfortunately, it is not in this book, although it was of this time period, but having found "Adapted" again, I decided that I wanted to read her other work. Carol Emshwiller tends to be described as a science fiction writer, but Luis Ortiz tell us in Emshwiller: Infinity x Two: The Life & Art of Ed & Carol Emshwiller, a biography chiefly of her husband, but secondarily of Carol, that she decided to break out of the genre and into more literary work. She certainly seems to have succeeded.

Emshwiller tells us in her introduction that she went through three stages in her writing, first, learning to plot, next, learning to hit her subconscious, and last, learning not to plot. I enjoyed the earliest stories, but most of these works seem to be after she stopped plotting. After much labor, I am about halfway through this book, and I suppose I will finish the book, but I find most of her work to be as enthralling as reading the cereal box during breakfast, and some of the worst could be collections of nonsense syllables.

Emschwiller has real writing ability, and a gift for description, but most of her works after the first dozen simply don't interest me. The most interesting part of her later stories is that she prefers not to explain the situation in which the character finds him or herself, but to let the reader put it together from the generally first-person narrative, which does a bit to replace the lack of a plot. Otherwise, I lived through this school of writing when it was new, and it hasn't improved with age.

On the matter of hitting one's self-conscious, I remember a college professor explaining that feeling something doesn't mean that it is a good work. As he said, perhaps one sees flies on a window and suddenly the meaning of life becomes clear and one writes down "Flies." That isn't a meaningful piece of work, although absurdists might argue that it is.

If one wants to argue that life doesn't have a plot, that is true, but we live life, we shouldn't need to read it. Emshwiller does appear to have returned to plotting later in life, so maybe I will try some of her later work.

"Adapted", which I still recommend, especially for anyone who has wondered if they are on the wrong planet, originally appeared in The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, May 1961, and later in Rod Serling's Devils and Demons.

Waste of a talent

Who knew a book this big could be this good? The first bit, anyway. As well as being a yarn-spinner, Emshwiller has a moral voice altogether refreshing. There's a kind of innocence, but also a kind of clear-sightedness, that I fear we may have lost. Although a large volume, it has been put together with evident care. Aside from the proof-reading, that is. Proof-reading? What proof-reading? Ah well. A younger, more refined Charles Beaumont? Love it, misprints* and all. Can Rudy Rucker's 2v complete or Kit Reed's recent uber-selected possibly compare?

At 1/3 in, I can see why her reputation's been a long time coming. In the Sixties, following a six-year hiatus, she migrated from the pulps to the little magazines. Were the Sixties good for Carol E? Well, were they good for Charles B? TV's gain (The Twilight Zone) was arguably prose narrative's loss. As for Emshwiller, too literary (intelligent?) for genre (as practised in the Fifties) she is just too darn genre to cut it as literature. Four hundred pages of what feel like arid writing exercises, Carol? We are supposed to be impressed? Sometimes less can be more. Five stars for those early ones though - sheer enjoyment

About the Author
Kenneth W. Osbeck (Litt.D., Cornerstone University; M.A., University of Michigan) taught for thirty-five years at Grand Rapids Baptist School of the Bible and Music and at Grand Rapids Baptist College. He also served as music director for Children's Bible Hour, Radio Bible Class, and several churches. He is the author of several books, including the best-selling Amazing Grace: 366 Inspiring Hymn Stories for Daily Devotions; 101 Hymn Stories; Hallelujah, What a Savior!; 25 Most Treasured Gospel Hymn Stories; and Joy to the World.

Simple Monologues Make the Point

These monologues are brief (under 5 minutes?) and capture the flavor of the Bible characters. They are great to use as part of a church service to add a little Christmas or Easter flavor, for example.

I or others have simply read them (sometimes in costume) and they went over well. Churches with extensive drama teams will probably not find these useful. But small and medium churches with small or no drama groups could find these a great way to demonstrate the value of drama.

If you are looking for another "layer" for church services, this is a great place to start. Also useful for camp presentations, as a short devotional, etc.

From a Biblical viewpoint, the author takes few liberties but adheres pretty closely to Biblical information.

A Work for Basic Insights and Interests

As one who has written and directed several dramas for my church, I found this work both interesting and useful although quite basic. Osbeck has done a credible job of identifying and summarizing the 52 Biblical characters portrayed. For an experienced director they are somewhat elementary and could require significnt additional research and editing before using. This reader found them much more narrative and informative than directly suitable for dramatic presentation. I compliment Osbeck on his work and do recommend it highly as an excellent starting point to learn of these 52 Biblical characters. Osbeck's work could be quite useful as reference material for ministers pursuing a series of sermons on topics such as: Women of the Bible, Great Biblical Leaders, The Prophets of the Bible, etc. Dr. D.

Helpful Resource

The book is split into 26 Old Testament and 26 New Testament monologues. There are parts for 18 women and 34 men. Each drama has Scriptural references, reflections, and suggested hymns to go along with it. Some characters don't seem to be fleshed out very well, but with a bit of personalization from the individual actor, they work well. For the most part, it's a great resource.
