About the Author
Iacopo Bruno once had a very special friend who had everything he could possibly want. You see, ever since the two of them were kids, Bruno's friend owned a magical pencil with two perfectly sharp ends. Whenever he wanted something, he drew it and it came to life! Once, he drew a spaceship and the both boarded it and went on a nice little tour around the galaxy. Another time, he drew a sparkling red plane that was very similar to the Red Baron's, only a little smaller. He piloted the two of them inside a giant volcano that had erupted only an hour earlier. Whenever Bruno's friend was tired, he drew a big bed. They dreamed through the night until the morning light shone through the drawn shades. This great friend of his eventually moved to China . . . but he left his magic pencil with Bruno!

Fail: Finding Hope and Grace in the Midst of Ministry Failure, by J.R. Briggs

2014 Best Books About the Church from Byron Borger, Hearts and Minds Bookstore "I thought God had called me to plant this church. Why did we have to shut our doors after only three years?" "I was at my breaking point. Then I got the news that our nine-year-old daughter had leukemia. I would have quit ministry forever, but I had no other employable skills." "False accusations were made against me and my family, wrecking our reputation permanently and forcing us to leave not only the church, but move out of the area." "I've served my church for the past 27 years and I've grown that church from 150 to 24 people." What do we do when we've failed? Some ministries are shipwrecked by moral failures like affairs or embezzlement. But for most of us, the sense of failure is more ordinary: disillusionment, inadequacy, declining budgets, poor decisions, opposition, depression, burnout. Many pastors are deeply broken and wounded, and we come to doubt that God has any use for us. J.R. Briggs, founder of the Epic Fail Pastors Conference, knows what failure feels like. He has listened to pastors who were busted in a prostitution sting or found themselves homeless when ejected from ministry. With candid vulnerability, Briggs explores the landscape of failure, how it devastates us and how it transforms us. Without offering pat answers or quick fixes, he challenges our cultural expectations of success and gives us permission to grieve our losses. Somehow, in the midst of our pain, we are better positioned to receive the grace of healing and restoration.

Review
"Here is a theology of failure to go with Jesus' sacrament of failure ('shake the dust off your feet and move on'). Find out why the best fail the most, and how the 'great cloud of witnesses' in Hebrews 11 is a cumulonimbus cloud haloing a rogues' gallery. Briggs's solution to a failure of nerve―the nerve of failure―deserves wide reading." (Leonard Sweet, bestselling author; professor, Drew University, George Fox University; chief contributor to sermons.com)

"Fear of failure is a power that holds many church leaders in a death grip. In this important book, J.R. Briggs boldly speaks from his own experience and that of others, reminding us that failure is inevitable, but the crucial question is how we find grace and eventually recovery in the aftermath of failure. The gospel that we encounter in Fail is undoubtedly good news, true liberation for our fearful, weary and broken selves. May we heed its call!" (C. Christopher Smith, coauthor, Slow Church, and founding editor of The Englewood Review of Books)

"In Fail J.R. Briggs succeeds in shining a light on an often taboo subject in modern-day ministry. Through the lens of the gospel, Briggs provides a vision to see failure as an invitation to grow in the grace and knowledge of God. If you are a minister, a former pastor, a fallen pastor or a struggling believer, Fail will encourage, strengthen and instruct you in the freedom offered at the cross. For 'by his wounds, we are healed.'" (Ed Stetzer, author, Subversive Kingdom)

"J.R. Briggs has something to say to pastors about our American obsession with 'success.' He holds to the Jesus-endorsed notion that those in ministry are called to faithfulness, not success, and that sometimes faithfulness takes the peculiar form of failure. Fail dares to tell the truth and will bring much-needed clarity and comfort to a multitude of ministers who, though faithful, have drunk from the bitter cup of failure." (Brian Zahnd, pastor, Word of Life Church, St. Joseph, Missouri; author, A Farewell To Mars)

"Someone needed to write a book that would cast vision for the transformational possibilities contained within experiences of failure. J.R. Briggs has done just that! In a voice that is honest, winsome and hopeful, he offers hard-won wisdom for leaning into God's gracious purposes even in the most painful experiences leaders face. Thanks be to God!" (Ruth Haley Barton, founder of the Transforming Center and author of Strengthening the Soul of Your Leadership)

"J.R. Briggs offers a sobering look at the pain, loneliness and shame we pastors regularly face. Like the apostle Paul, he understands that the best ministry happens when we allow it to flow through our own weakness and failure. Reading this book was like 'a kiss from God on my bruises.'" (Aaron Graham, lead pastor, The District Church, Washington D.C.)

"J.R. Briggs goes beyond giving us a robust theology of failure; he opens his veins and shares his life. He calls us to be faithful not efficient, to live vulnerably without shame. He gives us grace-filled opportunities to be our true selves. If you are a pastor, you need this book!" (JR Woodward, national director of church planting for V3, author of Creating a Missional Culture)

"Fail is like a barn for a tired, overburdened mule. That mule is us: preachers, pastors, leaders in the church. The wonderful gift we are given here is a re-yoking, where we come into that barn and have our yokes removed―which are of impossible weight to carry and manage―and slip into the yoke of Jesus, who carries all the burden of ministry and lets us join him, side by side, on the journey." (Lance Ford, author of UnLeader and coauthor of The Missional Quest)

"If you are struggling in ministry, this book will be like sitting down with a good friend who knows and understands what you are enduring. No quick fixes. No pat answers. No formulas. No judgment. Just gentle wisdom laced with grace to help you continue in God's calling." (Ruth Graham, author of In Every Pew Sits a Broken Heart)

"J.R. Briggs captures the struggle of pastors in his new book Fail. The fear of failure is enough to freeze us in our path to ministry. J.R. not only shows the facts as to how this is affecting ministers across every denomination but also points toward solutions for pastors to find their way out in the midst of failure. Pastors often find themselves incapable, inadequate and even incompetent in the task that God has placed before them. J.R. reminds them that the only hope they have to complete the mission God has placed on their calling is to rely on the Holy Spirit." (Maurice Graham, executive director, Shepherd's Staff Ministry, Inc.)

"With Fail, J.R. Briggs has captured a truth we all crave but fear to articulate. There is not merely grace for the burning- or burnt-out, there is the very life of Christ: full of honesty, meaning and sharp joy. Beyond platitudes or Twitter-quote pep talks, J.R. offers peace, real encouragement, and a better definition of success for Christian ministry. This is the next best thing to sharing the body and blood with people who understand. Failures large and small, visible and invisible, will stand up and shout for J.R.'s wisdom, wit and honesty. I know that I do." (Paul Pastor, associate editor of Christianity Today's Leadership Journal and PARSE)

"God is allowing thousands of men and women to fail. Isn't that wonderful? It is if you can see it from God's perspective. I believe that God, although hurting with you through your pain and loss, is also delighted in your failure. Why? Because he wants so much more for you! J.R. Briggs will give you language for what you're going through, help you find healing where you are and provide you with some handles for the journey ahead. As a man who has experienced his share of failure, I am so glad someone finally had the courage and hopefulness to write a book like this one. You'll be glad, too!" (Kevin Colón, neighborhood lead pastor at LifeBridge Christian Church, missional-incarnational coach & consultant at Missio)

"This book is CPR. Fail has given me breath for years to come. Within, Briggs offers an engaging, appealing and learned description of the failed life, invoking his readers to see afresh the breathtaking journey of all the landmarks along the way. Briggs reminds us that half of resurrection is death. And that, to truly live, we must fail. Jesus breathed his Spirit over a group of failed disciples from his cross. That same kind of thing seems to be going on in this book." (A. J. Swoboda, PhD, professor, pastor and author of Messy)

"I think Briggs is on to something. The life of the Christian is a constant oscillation between cross and resurrection. For pastors, that back-and-forth is more fraught than for others. People cast their stuff on us, whether they hate us or worship us as heroes. We see the stories in the Bible and expect miracles, and when they don't come we settle. We end up drawing on whatever charisma we may have instead of on what we know to be true about Jesus. . . . Briggs is right to notice that the moniker loser is the most crushing epithet our clever culture has yet devised. But it's not what God wants. God wants faithfulness. There is an irony in a book on failure becoming the next 'it' book on the Christian publishing scene, just as there is to a conference called Epic Fail being marketed with QR codes. But it smells a lot more like Jesus than most of what's on offer out there." (Jason Byassee, The Christian Century, October 15, 2014)

Grace for Pastors
By Monika Plume
Although pastors regularly share the gospel with others, the culture of ministry often looks more like performance. This book ministers to ministers and reminds them that the grace they preach to others is even extended to themselves. It's great for pastors who have had an obvious failure but also for those who live in fear of failure or just feel like a failure. For me it totally redefined success in ministry and restored my hope that God could use me in this most challenging work.

A Healing Balm
By Dave Gerhart
An outstanding book that challenges the metrics by which we measure our worth and our ministries. Especially relevant to those of us that bear the scars of ministry and seek health and growth from the pain. It is encouraging, practical, insightful and filled with hope! I can't recommend highly enough!

Healing through facing heartache
By Clint Walker
I suppose I am a glutton for emotional punishment. My wife sighed when she saw me with this book. And rightfully so. I have been feeling like a failure lately. I have especially felt down about my ministry work, but because I tie so much of my self-value to how successful I am as a pastor, it cannot help but also find its way into how I feel about who I am as a father, husband, friend, and human being. I feel like their is a big "L" for loser on my forehead at this point in my life, and try as hard as I may to feel different, I struggle to overcome it.

J.R. Briggs, in his book Fail, talks about the sense of failure that many pastors experience and/or feel, and sees that sense of failure at the very least as not fatal in life or ministry, and at best perhaps fertile ground for growth as a disciple of Christ and perhaps as a minister.

Briggs discusses all sorts of failure that a minister can experience. He speaks of failure in the ministry that is the result of sin. He shares about ministry failures that are a result of a lack of wisdom, or perhaps a series of poor communication patterns between the pastor and the congregation or congregational leadership.

Perhaps, what Briggs really grabs onto that is helpful is a study about amoral ministry failure. He describes in detail how that process comes about, how it wounds the soul of the Christian leader, and healthy ways of recovering from such a failure. I found this section of the book worth the price of the entire text.

Another thing Briggs does that is helpful, however is that he describes the landscape of the modern American church and the modern pastor's ministry. Using Eugene Peterson as a foil against the modern business and success model of doing church, he then borrows statistics that speak to the scene of pastoral ministry on pages 46-47 of this text. These include:

40 percent of pastors seriously considered leaving ministry in the last three months
25 percent of pastors have been forced out or fired from their church at least once
45 percent of pastors experience depression or burnout to the point where they express a need to take a leave of absence.
70 percent of pastors report not having a single close friend
Pastors who work less than 50 hours a week are 35 percent more likely to be terminated
David Hansen put it correctly in his book The Art of Pastoring; Ministry Without All the Answers. Ministry is a journey to the cross, or at least of taking up your cross and following Jesus. It is not supposed to be easy. But, there are points when you really wonder if God wants you on his ministry team anymore. Briggs gets this. He acknowledges this sense of failure as part of ministry, and then he leads ministers, not necessary out of failure, but to a place of healing and perhaps hope. Praise the Lord.

Great resource

Extremely useful, particularly having the digital version installed at your reading station. No more having to look up comparisons in PACS of similar aged kids to see which physes are still open. Shows both male and female normal osseous anatomy throughout the developing life.

Excellent resource on developmental skeletal maturity
By Eagle Vision
I have been in practice as a general diagnostic radiologist. However, I have a large pediatric patient population in my practice. This book is well organized, sorted by gender and body part. Multiple views of extremities are shown, giving the practitioner expected morphology of children who are skeletally immature. In combination with Keat's Development Variants, this makes a great addition to the Kindle library on my iPad 4. Since the reader can zoom in on each photograph, the quality of images can be depicted clearly.

In the appendix, there are several growth charts to aid in identifying appropriate skeletal milestones.

I highly recommend this book for a general radiologist, emergency medicine physician, urgent care physician or pediatric radiologist.

This book and accompanying DVD are fantastic. As a pediatric radiologist
By BT 180
This book and accompanying DVD are fantastic. As a pediatric radiologist , I find them irreplaceable. They are must have's in my opinion for any person who routinely interprets pediatric x-rays.

The DVD is a wonderful resource to evaluate for the normal appearance of various bones which can change over the patient's age and can mimic disease states. Anyone who owns the Keats book of normal variants should have this book right next to it.

How would Australia respond to a series of devastating terrorist attacks?
Would the blame automatically fall on the Muslim community? Are there other factors at play? How would a government respond as atrocity after atrocity is visited on the Australian people?
Home Grown is a political-action thriller based on one chilling question: how would Australia respond to a series of devastating terrorist attacks? In following Will Andrews in his mission to uncover the true mastermind behind the attacks, Home Grown delves into the dark shadows at the periphery of Australian society and the political machinations that erupt after the attacks.
Will’s optimistic view of humanity was challenged by a scarring incident during an SAS tour of Iraq. Will’s loyalties and ethics are further tested as the Australian Government heads down an increasingly dark path.
Will and his trusted Australian Federal Police team are thrust into a maelstrom of political intrigue and terrorism when a bomb explodes during Question Time in the Australian House of Representatives killing many of the nation’s leaders. All the suspicion falls on Islamic radicals.
Kate Brown, an ABC reporter, alerts Will to an anomaly from the Parliament House bombing and Will finds himself looking into the background of the newly appointed Minister for Homeland Security Michael Radford.
As the pressure for results from the Government increases, events continue to spiral out of control, as a kidnapping of an army doctor and the theft of an Ebola specimen appear to confirm suspicions of multiple plots by Islamic terrorists.
Will and his team appear to put an end to the troubles, however, a spectacular explosion destroying Scrivener Dam on Lake Burley Griffin in Canberra kills the new Prime Minister and others and Michael Radford takes over as Prime Minister.
Will finds himself pushed to the sidelines when his inquiries about Michael Radford get too close; a background as a possible war criminal in the Balkan Wars of the 1990s. More information about Radford and his activities is revealed and Radford fights for his political survival. The action culminates on the south-east coast of New South Wales in Australia where Radford’s activities are fully revealed.

Making Space: How the Brain Knows Where Things Are, by Jennifer M. Groh

Knowing where things are seems effortless. Yet our brains devote tremendous computational power to figuring out the simplest details about spatial relationships. Going to the grocery store or finding our cell phone requires sleuthing and coordination across different sensory and motor domains. Making Space traces this mental detective work to explain how the brain creates our sense of location. But it goes further, to make the case that spatial processing permeates all our cognitive abilities, and that the brain’s systems for thinking about space may be the systems of thought itself.

Our senses measure energy in the form of light, sound, and pressure on the skin, and our brains evaluate these measurements to make inferences about objects and boundaries. Jennifer Groh describes how eyes detect electromagnetic radiation, how the brain can locate sounds by measuring differences of less than one one-thousandth of a second in how long they take to reach each ear, and how the ear’s balance organs help us monitor body posture and movement. The brain synthesizes all this neural information so that we can navigate three-dimensional space.

But the brain’s work doesn’t end there. Spatial representations do double duty in aiding memory and reasoning. This is why it is harder to remember how to get somewhere if someone else is driving, and why, if we set out to do something and forget what it was, returning to the place we started can jog our memory. In making space the brain uses powers we did not know we have.

Review
A terrific book; very imaginative, yet based on solid science. (Michael Gazzaniga, author of Who’s in Charge?)

Making Space is written with a light touch, but with impeccable scholarship. It is extremely readable. (Randy Gallistel, Rutgers University)

Groh deftly elucidates the mental computations that allow understanding of location and boundaries, interweaving well-judged snippets of history. The mechanisms, such as the brain’s updates on eye movements, are fascinating--as is Groh’s revelation that neurons can ‘do double duty’ in tasks such as spatial navigation and memory. (Barbara Kiser Nature 2014-10-30)

Jennifer Groh’s wonderful book offers a much broader insight into how the senses we think of as separate gather information on our environment, and how nerves and the brain process the information to map our bodies and the world… It’s a fascinating subject that Groh describes well…It’s also an important one. (Jeff Hecht New Scientist 2014-11-29)

Groh’s book describes the general process by which the brain conceives of space in a highly unconventional and entertaining stream of Jennifer Groh’s consciousness…It lays out a fascinating field of inquiry (which is really multiple fields interwoven convincingly, filtered by Groh’s own thought processes) in a way that shows how a proper scientist thinks. (Stephen L. Macnik Scientific American 2014-12-13)

[A] wealth of beautifully intertwined information and knowledge about how sensation and perception work in the brain…There is much to praise here…It is exhilarating to feel [Groh’s] energy and cautious optimism about our capacity to understand how we perceive, and how that could lead to an explanation of how we go around and about in the world. (Tristan Bekinschtein Times Higher Education 2015-02-05)

In Making Space, Jennifer Groh has provided an engaging introduction to neuroscientific perspectives on the spatial senses, while also illustrating the contrast with psychological approaches to the functioning of sensory systems. (Gary Hatfield Times Literary Supplement 2015-11-27)

This is one of those really rare books that balances scholarship with pure page-turning delight. I'm a researcher in robotics, and as you likely know if you're considering this book, most of the robotics community was astonished to find that motor control in space is NOT like a video camera tied to activating motors; it is instead all about probability predictions about the "next move" in space!

Groh does for the spatial component what differential equations in dynamical systems do for the temporal: give us an astonishing snapshot of the many components working in harmony to resolve the electromagnetic spectrum into a simulated picture of the world.

By saying this is a fun and easy read, don't get the idea that this is one of those talk down to us "pop neuro" texts that oversimplifies the little we know. Ala Franz Kafka, "humans seem to think they know it all when they know a little," and Jen does not make that mistake here-- her "ahas," though wonderful and fascinating, are also seasoned with both humility, the vast amount we don't know, and plentiful bib/references for further reading.

The other thing I found amazing is that Groh brings in really up to date research on spatial issues like geometric projection, without killing us with the math, and in a way, renews the old homunculus that bored us so much with the heaps of MRI studies showing us where the little world stored the big world. Unlike those hundreds of books with the takeaway "what does that mean to me" (eg. "Heres where your simulated foot resides..."), Jen relates the wonder of new spatial discoveries to as distant a topic as how thought works, as well as the ancient but recently reviving field of Mimetics-- in fact, I'd categorize this as in the yet to be created field of Neuromimetics! Amazing book, highly recommended for the intelligent layperson, but with a great balance for the researcher. I'd even recommend this for pros in more diverse fields, like those working on the Internet of Things and designing embeds we can use to extend our senses.

My only gripe: (Publisher/Harvard Press, not author): PLEASE include an e version and a look inside. I know you want people buying this who will enjoy it as much as I have, and you'll accomplish that with the look inside. If you go to the author's Coursera and Harvard pages you can get a lot more info on this, but Amazon shoppers should also be able to see this right here.

I learned about this book through the Coursera course offered by the author. It seems like the book and course are connected and are very alike! The information offered in the book is very easy to understand and there are many diagrams and detailed explanations of complex topics that anyone can grasp.

Making Space makes sense
By J. Brew
"Making Space" is quite a useful neuroscience book. The goal of the book is to explain how we know where we are in space. There are great descriptions of how our sense convert external energy such as light and sound into neural signals and how our brains process these signals into location information. I've used this book as a read along guide while taking Professor Groh's course The Brain and Space via Coursera. Making Space is a nice reference while taking this course (my copy of the book now has many margin notes). I also think this would be a nice standalone book; it reminds me of some of Issac Asimov's excellent science books.

The Little Prover (MIT Press), by Daniel P. Friedman, Carl Eastlund

The Little Prover introduces inductive proofs as a way to determine facts about computer programs. It is written in an approachable, engaging style of question-and-answer, with the characteristic humor of The Little Schemer (fourth edition, MIT Press). Sometimes the best way to learn something is to sit down and do it; the book takes readers through step-by-step examples showing how to write inductive proofs. The Little Prover assumes only knowledge of recursive programs and lists (as presented in the first three chapters of The Little Schemer) and uses only a few terms beyond what novice programmers already know. The book comes with a simple proof assistant to help readers work through the book and complete solutions to every example.

Review

Computational theorem proving is so useful, effective, and important that its advocates present it in economic terms: about preventing costly errors in software and protocols. What gets lost is just how much fun it can be. Friedman and Eastlund, two jolly characters, eschew talk of bugs and bombs, and strip it to its essence as only a Little book can. Want proof? Look inside!

(Shriram Krishnamurthi, Professor of Computer Science, Brown University)

What can you learn about a program without actually running it? What can you know by reading the code? In the grand tradition of The Little LISPer and The Little Schemer, Dan Friedman and Carl Eastlund elegantly present small programs that contain big ideas, but now also show how to prove claims about their behavior. The question-and-answer format makes it surprisingly easy to learn and master inductive proof techniques -- it's like eating peanuts! Don't overlook the concise and elegant code for the J-Bob proof assistant itself, tucked in the back. The Little Prover is a marvelous introduction to the program proof techniques used in such tools as ACL2, Isabelle, and Coq.

(Guy L. Steele Jr., Software Architect, Oracle Labs, coinventor of the Scheme language, and coauthor of Common LISP: The Language)

Friedman and Eastlund's The Little Prover is a gentle introduction to the nuts and bolts of formal proofs about programs. Following on from The Little Schemer, it is an excellent guide for both thoughtful functional programmers wondering what it really means to know that a program is correct and do-it-yourselfers who want a taste of how proof assistants like ACL2 do their work. Bring your sense of humor and your thinking cap!

(Benjamin C. Pierce, Henry Salvatori Professor of Computer and Information Science, University of Pennsylvania)

A fun and enlightening introdution to computational logic.
By D. Buchanan
The Little Prover is a great introduction to computation logic. I really enjoy it because of its format, its pacing, and its ability to explain core concepts in mathematics and computer programming.

I like The Little Prover's question-and-answer format. It encourages me to write and understand proofs for myself, because the format explains the steps when I get stuck, and it helps me understand the significance of the steps when I succeed.

The Little Prover was very well paced. More complicated proofs are introduced at a rate that keeps them challenging and interesting but never impossible.

The way The Little Prover covers computational logic means I am able to relate it to my A-Level standard knowledge of proof in mathematics (A-Levels are the English equivalent of American high school). The book doesn't just show you how to use a computer program to do certain things, but relates what you're doing to concepts like inductive proof and recursion.

The format of The Little Prover is very similar to the other books in the Little series such as The Little Schemer. I highly recommend those too. The Little Prover also contains many ideas found in How to Design Programs (HtDP). For example the programs in The Little Prover clearly all use design recipes from HtDP and concepts such as natural recursion are mentioned in both HtDP and The Little Prover.

I was so excited that I pre-ordered a bunch of copies not just for myself but for all my friends!
By Peteris Krumins
The Little Prover was published just a few months ago and when I learned it's getting published I pre-ordered a bunch of copies not just for myself but for all my friends. I was that excited!

The Little Prover teaches the readers how to determine facts about recursive functions using induction. The book starts with programming concepts such as recursive functions and lists, and leads the reader along the shortest path to inductive proofs. It assumes knowledge of neither logic nor mathematics beyond arithmetic. Just like all other books in the series, it's written as a dialog between the authors and you in a super fun style with a lot of jokes and insider references. This book will make you think from page one and it will stretch your mind quite a bit.

You'll learn about axioms, theorems, what it means for something to be true in computing, conjectures, claims, counterexamples, total functions, partial functions, conjunctions, induction, natural recursion, and more.

While working through this book, you'll need j-bob, the proof assistant:

You'll truly appreciate this book only after having read the other books in the series (The Little Schemer, The Seasoned Schemer, The Reasoned Schemer, The Little MLer). Get those first, and then read this book. And then read all the books again for full effect.

I've placed this book #24 in my Top 100 Programming, Computer and Science books list:
