About the Author
Marc Delisle is a member of the MySQL Developers Guild - which regroups community developers - because of his involvement with phpMyAdmin. He started to contribute to this popular MySQL web interface in December 1998, when he made the first multi-language version. He has been actively involved with the phpMyAdmin project since May 2001 as a developer and project administrator. He has worked since 1980 at Coll¿ge de Sherbrooke, Qu¿bec, Canada, as an application programmer and network manager. He has also been teaching networking, security, Linux servers, and PHP/MySQL application development. In one of his classes, he was pleased to meet a phpMyAdmin user from Argentina.

It just kinda let down halfway through

This book starts off with a real bang, working you through the logic of how you would structure your data in a MySQL database. It works through two examples, a car dealership's needs for tracking the details about particular cars and their sales, and then a simplistic schema for storing airline flight information. About halfway through this book, you feel like you're really learning a lot of information, and then the second half just seems to mainly cough out some table definitions. I can't quite put my finger on exactly what went wrong about halfway through, but that's about the point where I felt like I stopped learning from this book and was just reading the remainder of what the author wanted to get regurgitated before he hit his page limit.
You probably won't come away from reading this book with any more confidence in your ability to structure the tables of a database than before you started reading it. Some good info. Overall - disappointing.

I found this to be very helpful

This book was very helpful in explaining the basic concepts. It is not an exhaustive manual on how to structure databases, but instead it is a great place to start learning.

Another element that I found valuable was how the author pointed out some common pitfalls in designing databases. Those are the kinds of things that only come by experience. If I hadn't read this book, I can see that there are several of the pitfalls that I would have fallen into.

I appreciated the many examples and illustrations. For some reason this author connected with my style of learning. It was fun to read!

My summary would be that this is a great place to start learning MySQL database design. It encompasses the basics and does a very good job explaining the concepts in plain and easy to understand language.

About the Author
Sue Teele, PhD is the author of several books, including The Multiple Intelligences School: A Place for All Students to Succeed, and a spatial inventory, The Teele Inventory for Multiple Intelligences. She is the Director of Education Extension at the University of California, Riverside, where she administers over twenty different programs for 8,000 to 10,000 educators a year. She created the first and only certificate in the study of multiple intelligences in the world. She lives in Riverside, CA.

Not a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow

It seems to me that Sue Teele had to search hard for a new spin on the multiple intelligences of learning in order to create "her own" theory. The analogy of learning as compared to rainbows was cumbersome and did not seem to follow a smooth path of thought. If a reader's main desire is to learn about the multiple intelligences, this would not be the best choice in literature. However, on the bright side, Teele includes a chapter with sample lesson plans which incorporate the multiple intelligences.

About the Author
Lama Thubten Yeshe (1935-1984) was born in Tibet and educated at the great Sera Monastic University. He fled the Chinese oppression in 1959 and in the late 1960s, with his chief disciple, Lama Thubten Zopa Rinpoche, began teaching Buddhism to Westerners at their Kopan Monastery, Kathmandu, Nepal. In 1975 they founded the international Buddhist organization, the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition (FPMT), which now has more than 160 centers, projects and services worldwide.

Nicholas Ribush is the founding director since 1996 of the Lama Yeshe Wisdom Archive, dedicated to preserving the teachings of Lama Yeshe and Lama Zopa Rinpoche. He graduated from Melbourne University Medical School in 1964 and first encountered Buddhism at Kopan Monastery in 1972. He was an ordained monk from 1974 to 1986. He helped establish Wisdom Publications with Lama Yeshe in 1976, established Tushita Mahayana Meditation Centre in New Delhi in 1977, and Kurukulla Center in Boston in 1989. Ribush was a member of the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition (FPMT) board of directors from 1983 until 2002. He lives in Lincoln, Massachusetts.

Lama Thubten Zopa Rinpoche is the Spiritual Director of the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition (FPMT), a worldwide network of Buddhist centers, monasteries, and affiliated projects, including Wisdom Publications. Rinpoche was born in 1946 in the village of Thami in the Solo Khumbu region of Nepal near Mount Everest. His books include Transforming Problems into Happiness, How to Be Happy, and Ultimate Healing. He lives in Aptos, California.

Caution - Prerequisites

I wanted to let folks know that I have not read this book (yet). The preface provides a clear and specific warning that the material is only for those that have completed Highest Yoga Tantra Initiation and I was able to confirm this with the nun at my local FPMT center. In typcial Buddhist fashion she didn't really provide a "rule" but did offer "it would be best if you waited..." sort of advice. As such I now have a ribbon around this book that says "read me when highest yoga tantra completed". I think this would be a good book for the generally curious and Lama Yeshe's writings that I have read are just amazing, but if you are making a purchase as part of your journey on the path it may be useful to you to be aware of the request Lama Yeshe makes in the preface.

Not idle reading

This book is an advanced work for experienced Buddhist practitioners in the Tibetan tradition. I doubt that other readers would get much out of it. It is like a cookbook, you have to do what it says if you want to satisfy yourself. And if you want to cook, you need the utensils. In this case you need to be studying with a lama, have received initiation and have some experience practicing in order to work with this book.

The teacher of the text is in the Gelug tradition. I am a Kagyu, so that colors what I say. The author is very formal and rigorous. He makes much of what I perceive as minor matters (don't move your meditation cushion, keep it in the same place throughout your retreat). So I filter out some of what he says as not essential.

I was practicing Vajrasattva when I bought this book and I wanted something to keep the practice fresh. This provided it.

If you are practicing Vajrasattva, this book will be very helpful. There are also some things in this book that could be helpful to other practitioners.

NO EMPOWERMENT REQUIRED!

This along with with a few of the other of the Vajrayana sadhanas like the Medicine Buddha sadhana do NOT require empowerment to be able to use. I have verified this with several monks and ngakpas.

With that being said, receiving the empowerment will drastically improve the benefits associated with this particular sadhana.

If you are interested in taking a proactive role in your spiritual and mundane well being I highly suggest the practice of Vajrasattva to burn up and eliminate negative karma that causes us to suffer spiritually and materially.

All of use have done wrong things in this life and in the past incarnations, this is a wonderful and powerful practice to be able to handle our negative karmic debt in a responsible way.

Vajrasattva is like catholic confession on steroids! I recommend everyone Buddhist or not (I am not) to practice karmic purification as a way to help avoid unnecessary suffering in our lives.

Fitting Title

With so many genres that offer fantastic novels, variety is so out there. As a avid reader I like to mix it up abit and historical romance is one of those. This is also my first time in reading this author so curious to see if she can hold my attention. Grace is not your average woman especially in that time, she is a midwife and healer. Some would often even call it witchery and nonsense but what they turned to in the form of medicine was torture mostly I think. In the place they are in she has earned a good following and respected for her skill. Her best friend is proof that she knows her stuff. The one who she does butt heads with and likes to rile though is Jonathan who works for her friend's husband. He also has a very sick son that he has come to the end of his choices that pride will be swallowed with him asking her to see him. They are also in the same mind about marriage-not for them, especially with their situations. That is the grand thing about love that it seems to like to bring two together that say nope and turn it around. In this you see how their relationship will take a turn and develop into something that neither saw coming or thought would happen. The spunk and personality of both will shine forth being revealed as you travel along with them. Thanks though to the time and place discretion is going to be needed or lives will be blackened. The banter they have with each other is delightful and at times so humorous too. The eloquence of courtship as much as they can have in their circumstances will fit right to them. The deception though will also cause others to think different especially where Jonathan is concerned and the direction of his future will be meddled in because of lies to cover up reality.The prejudice of the upper class will shine forth making you want to smack someone. As time goes on harder and harder will feelings be to hide and with a event that happens all will come to light in a unexpected way. So do love the line towards the end that includes the title that fits this novel to the tee on the very last page.

Fall in love again!

The Hearts of Honour series continues with a seductive tale of enemies turned into lovers.

Grace, the Hartley herbalist and midwife, and Jonathan, the Blackthorn estate manager, got off to a more than rough start in the first book of the series, Passion & Propriety. Their best friends, Hannah and William, fell in love in the face of adversity. At first, their love hit a nerve with both Grace and Jonathan, but they did find a way to accept it. In Grace's case, she even envied her best friend.

In Duty & Desire, Jonathan is at his wits end, watching his son, Peter, deteriorate day by day. When the last "specialist" drains his accounts, he allows Grace to examine the boy. Over the course of Peter's treatment, Jonathan comes to respect and admire Grace in a way he never thought possible. Grace also sees Jonathan in a new light, as a man who deeply loves his son and is unwaveringly loyal to those he cares for most.

DeSallier gives us an unforgettable romance in impossible circumstances. The intricacy of the plot had me devouring the novel in only a day. I loved how I was pulled into the story and the town of Hartley like I was one of the members of their community. The pacing gave a realistic feel to the story, making me smile and cry right along with the characters.

Always the queen of twists and turns, DeSallier shocked and amazed me with a climax I never saw coming, but completely fell in love with. I cannot wait to devour another of Elise DeSaller's novels as soon as she releases it.

LOVED this Romance!!!

I was so excited to get Grace's story after reading the first book in the series, Passion and Propriety. Grace was a wonderful supporting character there and she's a fabulous main character here. She's strong and it irks her to be just a wee bit jealous of the relationship Hannah and William had in that book. As a bastard daughter and a woman who works for her living with her midwifery skills, she doesn't think she's going to be able find a husband of her own.

Jonathan has been looking for a cure for his young son's illness for years. Unfortunately, the doctors of the time have nearly killed the little guy. He's at his wit's end when he agrees to let Grace examine young Peter. They work together to bring him back to health. And instead of sniping at each other (as they have been for ages) they find an attraction between them that gives us, the reader, a very satisfying case of UST (unresolved sexual tension). Even as Grace tells Jonathan that he needs a more "gently bred" young woman as his wife, the two enter into a secret relationship...and goodness me...is it hot! But it's not "just" sex...no, this is love and it's fabulous.

A great cast of supporting characters add a lovely depth to the story. And some laughs, too. I did love young Peter!

Loved this book, and now I want more from this author. I highly recommend this book to people who want that Regency experience with a side of steam...and love.

Perfect Enterprise Sales Book

I always love any book on sales. I can always learn something or be inspired more. The goal is always to sell more, bigger and faster.

The problem Selling above and Below tries to solve is many times what appeals to the managers - the features and benefits do not make the sales to the CEO. So it talks about the dual selling strategy. I know when I was CEO of a billion $+ enterprise, I would often get the wrong pitch. A pitch that was not in line with the overall corporate goals but one that was more feature oriented.

I liked chapter 16 that talked about accelerating the sale. I know this is a challenge. I have lots of sales that are 90% likely to happen but payroll that needs making now.

I particularly like any sales book that gives me ideas on increasing sales efficiency. This is a lot about what sales tricks are all about.

Good sales people get rejected 80 or 90% of the time. A good inspirational sales book helps pump them up to go out and sell another day.

Good book - I recommend it for anyone selling enterprise level products.

Important for B2B Sales

If you are involved in B2B sales, then this book should be on your reading list. As you are probably aware the sales process and dynamics have changed drastically over the past few years. The concepts and ideas included in this book are on the leading edge of best practices for B2B sales.

William Miller, author of Selling Above and Below the Line, makes a strong case that in B2B sales, there are two separate buyers. The first buyer, what he calls Below The Line (BTL) buyer, are the users of the product or service. They are the ones concerned with the features and the direct benefits. The BTL buyer wants to know how the product/service works, how difficult it will be to get up and running, and the more practical points of actually using the new product or service.

On the other hand, the Above The Line (ATL) buyers are the C-suite buyers. They are more concerned with return on investment, the impact on the next quarters earnings or budget.

If a B2B salesperson approaches both buyers with the same standard sales pitch, he will lose one set of buyers. The ATL and BTL buyers speak a different language, have different goals and are moved by different drivers. Generally a B2B salesperson must first convince the BTL buyer that their product or service will be the best solution for their particular need. Once the salesperson has sold the BTL buyer, the next step is to make the pitch to the ATL (C-level) buyer.

Mr. Miller advises that taking the same approach with the ATL buyer will often kill the sale. The ATL buyer is not interested in being bored with the technical details of the product or service. Their main concern is the financial impact of buying the product or service.

Mr. Miller then give very specific approaches for selling both the BTL and the ATL buyers. He goes into great detail about how to structure the approach for both parties.

Mr. Miller writes in a very conversational style and included plenty of examples and stories. The book is easy to read, well organized and the lessons are well thought out. This will certainly improve your sales success.

Buy this, read it , and keep it handy.

This is a missing book in your sales library. The author has simplified the value sale by splitting it in two parts. Below The Line buyers are still concerned with features and benefits (and you need to address this) . The Above the Line buyers are concerned with why they want to buy ( the value/impact) and many sales people do not address this. This view makes your selling that much more effective. ATL buyers can add more speed , budget and focus to your deal. But its likely you may not have known how to get there. Now you have a guide book to help you make this happen . Miller has a clear concise written style with enough illustrations and stories to make his points. Buy this, read it , and keep it handy.
