modern and practical

This text is an extensive and modern treatment of reliability with many practical case studies. It covers many of the standard topics including most of the topics covered in the recent book by Meeker and Escobar (1998) "Statistical Methods for Reliability Data". It is unique in its coverage of warranties (Chapter 17). These authors are very knowledgeable about the literature on warranty analysis and have edited the Product Warranty Handbook published by Marcel Dekker in 1996 and published their own text dedicated solely to that topic ("Warranty Cost Analysis" published by Marcel Dekker in 1994). Emphasis is placed on case studies which are discussed up front in the Overview chapter and treated in detail in Chapter 19.

Down-to-Earth Principles on True Success

Hybels presents a fine definition of true, godly success in this work. He begins by describing the downward path to Christian success as opposed to the upward path to secular success. He then addresses various principles of success or greatness: power, commitment, servanthood, humility, obedience, and joy. Following an explanation of each principle and its biblical basis, Hybels includes a current-life illustration to drive his point home. He concludes his work by sharing his own personal story of descending into greatness, appealing to the reader to follow the biblical pattern. His conclusion is the most powerful part of the entire book.
I wholehearted recommend this book to all Christians, but especially to Christian leaders who are pursuing success. As the Scriptures say, and as Hybels says, being great is found not in becoming the head of the pack, but in becoming the servant of all.

In this incredible book Bill Hybels and Rob Wilkins put contemporary flesh on the biblical truth that he would lead must first make himself nothing. (Chapters are paired, one teaching a principle and its partner showing how it is playing out in the life of real people.) It's a powerful reminder that true Christianity centers on the advancing of the Kingdom of God, not in the advancement of ourselves. This book will change your life. It's a well written, soul scraping challenge that every Christian should read.

Hybels isn't a wordsmith, but he's probably the best I've heard/read at hitting you between the eyes with a simple, powerful message. This book chronicles the lives of several individuals who turned their frantic, rat-race lives upside down by "descending" into humility and self-sacrifice. Hybels parallels the life and attitudes of Christ, describing how the God of the universe humbled himself to become our Savior in order to reach a greater joy. Easy, motivational, powerful reading

This is a wonderful story about a dream, determination, discipline, and courage. It's a gaze into the rat race tunnel, but it points the way out. Many will identify with it and take away something valuable. The author's narrative on life in the sun and sand and sea is mesmerizing. I loved this book.

About the Author
Ed Robinson was a reporter and editor of a weekly newspaper, The Smyrna Times. He was also a contributing writer for The Mariner Magazine, a Maryland based publication covering all things boating and fishing. After twenty years working for a major utility, he quit his job and moved onto a boat. He and his wife Kim are somewhere on the west coast of Florida. A must read for us wanna be liveaboards!

First things first, I love this book and highly recommend it!
Now that I got that out of the way here is the fun part..
My beautiful Girlfriend and I are newbie liveaboards in Punta Gorda Fl where Ed and Kim spend a lot of time (When they are not at pelican bay or out on some adventure). We met them and enjoyed their tales about boating and life and when I found out that Ed wrote a book I had to get my hands on a copy. It's not only a manual about how to make the switch from land lover to liveaboard, but it also has very well written accounts of some of their first major trips on Leap of Faith that kept me up way to late, I kept telling myself just one more chapter! The book is full of motivating passages and practical advice about how to be happy with less. I really wish I had this book before I made my move, it would have made a big difference in my choices, but I am glad I got it while I am still relatively new to this.
All in all I really can't recommend this book enough, it is far more interesting than any other book on this subject that I have ever found. This book is a great book that you can't read just once and I hope Ed has more to come!

No Recommendation from me

If you are looking for a book about someone burnt out from a middle management east coast job that decides to live on board a comfortably sized 36 foot MOTOR boat (no sail) with high maintenance and run costs.....who admits himself that he does not know that much about boating after about 20 chapters....that does not leave the Southwest Florida waters.... brags at long detail about drinking beer and rum at happy hour EVERY DAY....(while I am at it) brags about how awesome he and his life is at every opportunity…….berates the reader repeatedly for not making the same decisions...goes on stream of conscience mindless political diatribes...uses obscure text references from a Jimmy Buffet wannabe...publisher does not check spelling or grammar....shows little appreciation and respect for the Coast Guard and the man hours and costs they invested in a search and rescue to find him based on a little bad luck combined with lack of experience and poor communication….claims after 30 months "on water" (if you consider sitting in southwest Florida drinking rum and beer on a 36 foot house boat "on water") that he is an example for the masses aspiring to be life sailors.

You have found the perfect book.

If you are looking for a book of long year experience around sailing in any form, start-up and run costs of living on waters, check lists and voice of experience in choosing a sailors life, things done right, learning experiences from which others could benefit.

You should look elsewhere. I should have. If anyone has suggestions, please send a comment.

p.s. To be fair, "The Plan" of four steps to financial freedom is good common sense that everyone should consider. In my opinion, this should have taken no more than one chapter as part of the initial start-up and transition process of moving to a life on water. Not the primer for the whole book!

p.s.s.s. One plus, this book and the two hours it stole from my life has finally inspired me to post my first Amazon review after over a decade ++ as an Amazon customer. This book is really bad.

Promises much, delivers very little

The first few chapters were lightly entertaining and promised more, but there was only one sailing story, and it turns out he has a trawler and ends up complaining too much. He basically took the Dave Ramsey Financial Freedom Course and applied it to being a Boat Bum. Around chapter 20 he goes off on some tirade that is supposed to expose me to something, probably political. The only thing I got from the book is that I wasted $3.99 - don't make the same mistake. Oh and Jim Morris is no Jimmy Buffet.

6-Star Utterly Brilliant Survey and Strategy

The author of this book has done something no one else has done – I say this as the reviewer of over 2,000 non-fiction books at Amazon across 98 categories. For the first time, in one book, we have a very clear map of what is happening where in the way of economic and social development; a startlingly diplomatic but no less crushing indictment of nation-state and militaries; and a truly inspiring game plan for what we should all be demanding from countries, cities, commonwealths, communities, and companies, in the way of future investments guided by a strategy for creating a prosperous world at peace.

This is a nuanced deeply stimulating book that makes it clear that China’s grand strategy of building infrastructure has beaten the US strategy of threatening everyone with a dysfunctional military that crushes hope and destroys wealth everywhere it goes; that connectivity (cell phones, the Internet, roads, high-speed rail, tunnels, bridges, and ferries) is the accelerator for wealth creation by the five billion poor that most Western states and corporations ignore; and it provides to me more surprises, more factoids I did not know, more insights – than any five to ten other books I have read over time.

At one point it occurred to me that in some ways the author is our generation’s successor to Alvin Toffler, Peter Drucker, and Robert Kaplan, combined. I really am deeply impressed, in part because the author’s insights come from years of crisscrossing the world and touch reality in a hands-on manner not achieved by any diplomatic, intelligence, commercial, media, or academic network in existence today; and in part because the book comes with 38 glorious color maps that are each alone worth the price of the book [an appendix points to 38 web sites that supplement the book and are a discovery journey of their own].

This is the best book – the deepest and the most useful – the author has produced to date. This is a book that should be read by every prime minister, president, senator, organizational chief – and by those who aspire to such positions. Many people publish content – few publish context – this book has both.

I have over ten pages of notes – below are just 4 quotes and 10 insights from among the hundred or so I took notes on – and strongly recommend this books for all libraries, all war colleges, all university overview courses on civilization and its malcontents.

INSIGHTS:

3/4 of the world’s population lacks basic infrastructure and utilities – this is the center of gravity going forward.

China has 2,000 commercial maritime vessels compared to 200 for the USA at the same time that Chinese high-speed rail is the 21st century alternative to air and road travel around the world.

China also has multiple sucking chest wounds, including the loss of half its rivers such that its population has one fifth the per capita water compared to the rest of the world; buildings that last fifteen years instead of thirty-five.

Devolution (smaller sovereignty/control zones) is inherently both democratic and efficient – we are migrating from sovereign space to admin space, in which hybrid governance where all non-government players have equal voice and vote) removes friction and increases flow.

Global warming is good for Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, and Russia – the Arctic is the next frontier, and ideally will be kept demilitarized - a priority championed by Norway.

Iran is the most connected nation in the Middle East.

Muslim violence in the Middle East is politically fostered and neither inherent in Islam nor ideological.

Russia, for lack of infrastructure, is losing swaths of its previously controlled territory, citizens, and resources to Europe in the East and China in the West; Brazil, India, Indonesia, Nigeria, and Russia are all under-performing for lack of investment in infrastructure (communications and transportation).

Special Economic Zones (SEZ) represent the unbundling and remixing of territory and resources, the relative demise of the nation-state in the face of superior agility at the city-state level.

Systemic change happens every couple of centuries – we are on the cusp of a global systemic revolution that will change every paradigm from economics to governance to lifestyle.

I have one caveat about this book, easily corrected in future printings and translations. The book comes with the most incomplete index I have ever encountered in a book of this quality and depth. If the book as a whole is a six-star work, the index is at best a 2 and barely so.

Maps are not included with Kindle edition.

Like the author I too appreciate good maps and was expecting to find them in this book. The maps are not included in the book, at least in not in the Kindle edition. Instead you are directed to a url. I used an iPad and iPad Pro to access this and the map comes up with a default page showing North America and Africa....Asia is somewhere off the screen. You can use the hard to use controls to zoom out and then you see China,but at least on iPads there is not a way to pan. I am not able to zoom into Asia. I have just purchased the book and have skimmed the book...it looks to be very interesting reading, so I would still recommend this book but be forewarned that you won't be able to access the maps when reading the Kindle book unless you have internet connectivity. I tried this with Chrome too as I thought it might just be the Safari browser and got the same results. When I brought the same map up on my iMac, using Chrome, I was able to pan with the mouse. I don't know what the experience would be with a Kindle Fire.

A Word-Dense Review of an Idea-Dense Book

I'm not sure if Khanna's latest book is a futurology tome, a besieging number of examples for the emergence of the supply chain as the organizing principle of civilization, or the most readable macro-economics text I've seen. His arguments are cogent and convincing. If I had to summarize – human interaction, connectedness, and the marketplace will rule the future, enabled by digital technology and the pressing needs of the marketplace. Most of the vices of the political and religious world and the murderous nature of man will be ironed out by interdependence, less reliance on nations and more on financial, service, and manufacturing networks, and the global specialization of labor. He makes the liberal argument compellingly that the single largest reason to do a trade deal is to suppress war and support stability, and the more trade deals, even bad ones, the better. This is a long range view that the 2016 USA presidential race has conveniently forgotten.

Parag doesn't sugar-coat it – the dross that humanity drags with it that truly threatens mankind will take concerted effort to overcome: crisis venues like global warming, ethnic cleansing, rising sea levels, rapidly mutating diseases and epidemics, the interplay of population growth with straitened resources. He also points out over and over that investment in infrastructure is the single greatest payout a city, industrial sector, region, or nation can make. The losers will be the ones who make this investment their goal too late, or who outsource it (like Mongolia has to China) to others without getting a proper ownership stake. He also points out that bad things, like human trafficking, illegally supporting failed or dictatorial states, drug running, and terrorism are also facilitated by interconnectedness.

One area that this convincing book (how many times will I mention that it is convincing?) did not address to my satisfaction is the pinch on the nation states. To stay connected in the midst of globalization, they have increasing pressures on their regulatory environment, on their sovereignty, on their tax rates, on their political devolution to ethnic groups and to the cities. At the same time, he calls upon nations to save the hinterlands, promote infrastructure, presumably maintain military organizations (if nothing else than as shock troops for epidemic response), educate the masses, and most importantly save large disenfranchised classes even as national tax bases fritter away to other political / economic states. It's nice to have the problems pointed out but more difficult to understand next steps. Revolutions show us that the big transitions are the zones of most trauma and human loss.

Khanna has the credentials (look him up) to write a book that shows how the networks and their friction and flow will triumph over borders and parochial political forces in the long term, and I think he's got it right. It's a message that is simple in an incredibly complex world – like Adam Smith's unseen hand of the market, Khanna's Connectography implies that the linkup is the thing, and that interconnection is so rewarding to every player for every reason measurable that it becomes an unstoppable force. Like Smith's unseen hand, its sheer distributed nature means it will defeat hierarchic organized efforts to stem it.

About the Author
We have managed to find the ideal author for this new book, Chris Gibbs, a 42-year-old semiretired web designer and vice secretary, newsletter editor and technical adviser of the Locost Car Club. He has impeccable credentials for the job in hand, as he built his own Locost between 1997 and 1999 and has access to a tremendous database of Locost information through the Locost Car Club, which he currently runs in his spare time. He is currently working on a self-designed single-seater track-day car in the style of a 1960s F1 car, with Sierra running gear and a Honda Fireblade motorcycle engine.

Best DIY Car Instruction Book So Far

Chris Gibbs has taken the 'Locost' concept a step further. As this new book has CAD drawings (I believe done on Solidworks), it probably does not have any dimension errors that crept into the Ron Champion book. The book takes you through drawings and instructions so you can end up with a Ford Sierra (Merkur) based roadster. All you need are tools, patience, time, money and a lot of hard work. The single donor vehicle concept helps but only if the abovementioned vehicle is available (and affordable!) in your country. However, with some ingenuity and help from other builders online, you may be able to come up with something good. If you have questions there's even an official Haynes Roadster Forum to help you! Author Chris Gibbs participates in this official Haynes forum and posts updates to the book, corrections (yes even this book needs a few), advice and guidance.

Ron champion still the champion

I own all the previous editions of this book. This has been the least usefull unless you really do have the donor car used in it. I recommend the Ron champion book instead because it gives more latitude to adapt many old cars instead of one single rear suspension from a European ford. If this will be the first book of this type that you will purchase then I would recommend it. Those with experience and access to the internet would be better off with Ron champions book.

NOT the new locost reference

I was really expecting this book to bring a much needed update on Ron Champion's book but it's more of the same. The donor is still UK only and even there, it's getting hard to find. The drawings have dimensional errors like Champion's book. The design of the chassis is still lacking because it still does not incorporate some triangulations (Aussie mods) that are known to improve rigidity. A lot of the new designs shown in the book are overly complex (the pedal box is a good example). Finally, it still leaves a bunch of details out. I would recommend people to stay with Champion's book for inspiration and complement with Tanner's book or join a forum.

About the Author
Arthur Versluis is the editor-in-chief of "Esoterica" and the founding president of the Association for the Study of Esotericism. He is the author of numerous books, including "Sacred Earth", "Restoring Paradise", "The New Inquisitions "and "The Secret History of Western Sexual Mysticism". He lives in Michigan where he is a professor of American Studies at Michigan State University.

Open doors to gnosis

Arthur Versluis has penned a book which will open doors for anyone seeking a more meaningful experience of the essence of Christianity. The writing is masterful, compelling, convincing, and inspiring. Not to be confused with the theosophical movement of Blavansky, Besant, etc., Dr. Versluis' "Theosophia" takes the reader through a journey of esoteric Christian thought. The work of Jacob Boehme is perhaps the most significant "eye-opener" here, for it is in this study that one may begin to appreciate the "inner dimensions" inherent in the Christian faith, allowing the seeker to remain faithful to doctrinal elements of Christianity while not succumbing to "new age" so-called theologies. For this reader, a totally new world was unveiled thanks to the author's perceptions of gnosis.

A Must Read For Any Christian Seeking A Deeper Understanding Of Their Faith

The title of this book will instantly be associated with Mme. Blavatsky's Theosophical Society which is an unfortunate mistake. The theosophy which Versluis speaks of is more related to Gnostic and mystical Christianity than Blavatsky's syncretic blend of the world's religions. Versluis recognizes the negative connotations that Gnostic carries with it and tries to offer insight into the true nature of Gnostic thought. However he does not focus on famous Gnostics such as Marcion and Valentinus but examines the thought of Tauler, Eckhart and Boehme. Jacob Boehme is a fascinating and complex figure and Versluis offers some hope of understanding the complex works of the perhaps the most famous Christian theosopher. He also examines the troubled relationship of Platonism and Hermeticism with Christianity which has an important bearing on later Christian theosophy. Be warned this book is relatively easy to read considering the topics being discussed but one might want to read around some of the key themes and characters first.

Versluis between Guenon and Boehme

"Theosophia: Hidden Dimensions of Christianity" by Arthur Versluis is an interesting look at Christian Hermeticism. Versluis is a scholar specializing in esotericism, but this book feels more like his own, personal interpretation of the mystical tradition within Christianity. Tauler, Boehme and Baader seem to be the author's favourite mystics. He is inspired by René Guenon and Henry Corbin, but sometimes strays from a strict Traditionalist analysis.

Three things stand out in "Theosophia".

First, the author makes a distinction between Hermeticism and Gnosticism, or between true gnosis and so-called Gnosticism. Versluis sees most forms of so-called Gnosticism as pessimistic, antinomian, immoral and morbidly world-denying. He makes an exception for Valentinian Gnosticism, Manicheanism and Catharism, but seems to interpret the latter two in somewhat unusual ways. Hermeticism, by contrast, is world-affirming, wants to redeem matter and is compatible with both Church hierarchy and a political program. Since the author affirms the erotic mysticism of many "Theosophists", a critic might argue that there's a very thin line between respectable Hermeticism and antinomian-cultish Gnosticism!

Second, the author doesn't accept the distinction between "apophatic" and "kataphatic" mysticism, seeing them as two paths to the same goal, or even as the same path seen from two somewhat different perspectives. I find this angle interesting. Since the goal of the mystic is both God-union and redemption of the fallen world, Versluis doesn't talk much about "emptying the mind", other than as a method to achieve a higher stage. This makes his book sound less depressive than the usual Advaita-inspired fair.

Third, the book contains political speculations. These are extremely eclectic and confused. On the one hand, Versluis seems to accept a hierarchic, conservative and anti-modernist perspective derived from the Traditionalists. Thus, he expresses support for the Orthodox Church and for the correspondence between the angelic hierarchy and the ecclesiastical ditto found in the mystical writings of Pseudo-Dionysius the Aeropagite. Versluis is also interested in the political thought of Franz von Baader, the Bavarian Christian esotericist who supported "the Holy Alliance" after the defeat of Napoleon. The author even attacks Vatican II for abolishing the Tridentine Mass! Apparently, Latin is a sacred language. (Versluis seems unaware of the fact that the Orthodox Church often used the vernacular in its liturgy already during the Middle Ages. Witness Old Church Slavonic!) On the other hand, Versluis admits that his main role model Boehme was a Protestant, and that both he and other Behmenists emphasized the transformation of the individual. So did the Radical Pietists. Versluis tries to harmonize the two standpoints, by claiming that Boehme and Dionysius really represent the same tradition adapted to two different historical periods. This is somewhat unconvincing: if mysticism is adapted to individualism or voluntary communities, we are surely speaking about a very different "tradition" than mystics working inside a Church hierarchy!

While Versluis concentrates on Christian Hermetism, he sees parallels with the Jewish Kabbala, Muslim Ismailism and Sufism, Platonism and Neo-Platonism, ancient Egyptian religion, and certain Christian "heretics" such as the Cathars. (He doesn't mention the Messalians.) Versluis' interpretation of the Christian scriptures is allegorical and ahistorical. He never explains the function of Jesus in the Hermetic system. Is Jesus needed at all, if already the Egyptians knew the truth? Nor does he explain why the Bible sounds historical, if its "real" message is the exact opposite.

I assumed Versluis would be a "liberal" in matters religious, but at least in this book - published in 1994 - he comes across as a Guenonian-Behmenist hybrid. That being said, I nevertheless found "Theosophia" (or perhaps "TheoSophia") somewhat useful, and therefore give it four stars.
