Good for 2 groups of readers.

This book is suitable for 2 sets of audiences:
a) Those without prior knowledge of Probability and Statistics, but with a strong maths background;
b) Those who already have a reasonable knowledge in Probability and Statistics (like myself, I hope), who want a more technical cut to their knowledge. After all, probability and statistics should involve heavy use of matehematics at higher level.
On the other hand, if your maths background is not so strong, I would suggest a less technical book first, such as Mood, Graybill, Boes, which is easier to follow. Then once your basic Probability and Statistics knowledge is reasonable, you can move on to Rohatgi, which will give you a more technical cut.

Solid introduction to probability and statistics

I used this book in one of my advanced probability courses, and it helped me to improve my understanding of the theory behind probability. It definitely requires a background in probability and as the author says it's not a "cookbook", but a mathematics text.

The authors develop the theory based on Kolmogorov axioms which solidly founds probability upon measure theory. All the concepts, limit theorems and statistical tests are introduced with mathematical rigor. I'm giving this book 4 stars cause sometimes, the text gets extremely dense and technical. Some intuitive explanations would be helpful.

Though, this is the right book for the mathematicians, industrial engineers and computer scientists wishing to have a strong background in probability and statistics. But, beware: not suitable for the novice in undergrad.

I am a graduate student studying statistics and this is our departmental text for statistical theory. The authors of this text remind me of the type of teachers who come into class and write a lot of math on the board with little explanation. What explanation is given is of little help and nearly impossible to navigate. Open up to a random page and you won't know what section or chapter you are in because the publishers failed to include these as headings. Many of the exercises at the end of each section have incredibly difficult solutions requiring theorems included nowhere in the book or a great deal of algebraic manipulation and calculus and very little statistical ability.

I realize that this text was intended to be highly mathematical, but if you are interested in a graduate level text that explains statistical theory 100x better than this text, see Casella and Berger's. The only reason my department uses this text instead is because a professor is buddies with the author.

My classmates and I complain about this text constantly. It is truly a nightmare.

The recent global clergy sexual abuse scandals in the Roman Catholic Church have shocked the world. Many questions linger, but only now is the truth finally coming out.

And perhaps most important of all, is it really over? Has the Church taken effective steps to truly protect the children in its care?

The answers will startle, surprise and even confound many. Jay Nelson, the author, to his own amazement, found many of them in his own backyard – in the “Land of Enchantment,” New Mexico.

As expert and victims advocate Tom Doyle put it, “New Mexico was the epicenter of the first major epidemics of Catholic clergy sexual abuse and hierarchical cover-ups.” In this ancient, religious, but impoverished land, the Church found an ideal dumping ground for the monsters in their midst. Here, where the Conquistadors imposed the faith with fire and steel on reluctant natives, where Jews and even witches fled to hide from the Spanish Inquisition, the Catholic Church embarked on a bold experiment.

Across the mountains from where the atom bomb was born, another secret project began in 1947. There, in a town called Jemez Springs, a religious order called the Servants of the Paraclete began to quietly take in and minister to priests suffering from alcoholism and worse problems, including rapists and accused murderers. From there, they would be sent back out into ministry without alerting anyone, to continue their ravages across the state, the country, and even the world.

It’s an incredible story, but it could not have happened without direction from Rome. Deciphering the codes in Church documents from the Middle Ages to Vatican II, Nelson shows that the cover-up started even before the discovery of America. They show how it was run by the Inquisition, and most startlingly of all, how the current pontiff, Pope Benedict XIV, bears unsuspected personal responsibility for the scandals happening in the first place, and their ending.
Jay Nelson, a clergy abuse survivor as well as a former cleric, also covers how the clergy abuse crisis first blossomed in New Mexico. He details how the Church’s strategy was developed there to limit disclosure, and how successful that has been.

Tom Doyle also wrote: “The author thoroughly combed through a tangled array of data from divergent sources and pieced together this sordid story. Those who want to close their eyes to this sorry chapter in Catholic history will be shocked but Jay Nelson comes up with the facts and not more myth.”
This is, as Doyle said, “a chapter of Catholic history that must be told.” The sobering and thoughtful conclusions for the future of the Church, drawn from recent developments, shows why there is good reason to doubt that it can ever truly change. SONS OF PERDITION presents a challenge to believers, former members, and public citizens that anyone concerned with the fate of Catholic Church or its most vulnerable members must consider.

There are essentially two symmetrical sections to the book. The first covers Kripke models ('standard models' in the jargon of Chellas), axiomatic normal modal logics, and then filtrations of such models to show these logics have the finite model property and are decidable. To tie up the section there is an application with a chapter on deontic logic. The second section has the same structure with the topics being neighborhood models (called 'minimal models' by Chellas) and classical modal logics (some of which are strictly weaker than the weakest normal modal logic K). Unfortunately the application chapters (deontic logic and conditional logic) are poorly motivated, though one might think the whole point of those chapters is to motivate the inclusion or validation of certain deontic or conditional principles.

There is a lot of good stuff that is relegated to sections on exercises--e.g., p-morphisms, a safe extensions theorem, modal algebras, translations and correspondences between modal formulas and their models and first-order ones and their models (known other places as "correspondence/definability theory").

While there is a good number of exercises, most of them I encountered were quite easy and repetitive. Because of this, I found the text better suited to philosophy undergraduates (or novice graduates) than computer science or mathematics students. But at the same time there is little philosophical digression.

The most redeeming feature of the book, I thought, was the latter section on neighboorhood models and weak modal logics. I was also surprised to find the little "correspondence theory" that there was in the book. However, a better variation of exercises (in terms of both difficulty and method of proof/construction) would be greatly welcome.

An excellent introduction to modal logic

Modal logic is the logic of necessity and possibility. It includes "deontic logic" - the logic of duty (and the logic of the law), plus epistemic logic. Modal logic is a simplified form of the first order predicate logic.
The text explains the various axioms of modal logic -- such as "M, C, K, N, P" Other texts include Sally Popkorn (emphasis on semantics), and Hughes & Cresswell (slighly more advanced).

NOT AN INTRODUCTION

Looking for an _introduction_ I selected this book. After receiving it I realized that I was not prepared for this introduction. With a background in business, math and computer logic I thought that this might be an easy place to start to learn (it says introduction) Modal logic.

1. The syntax is never fully explained
2. The symbols are so small they are very hard to read - hence, it is easy to mix some of them to the ​point of ill-logic
3. Never is there an explanation as to what the reader should have studied to understand the introduction

Will hold on to this book and re-review after I find a REAL introduction to modal logic.
