Like BCO/MCO/NCO but for class D-A

This book and the first volume (Basic Chess Openings) (...) are an excellent opening book for players between class D and class A. They cover the basic ideas of the openings. In particular they look at all the alternatives that your normal opening book assumes you already know how to refute.

So for example: 1 e4,e5, 2Nf3 Nc6, 3 Bc4. This is a line that everyone knows (the italian) and everyone knows the "correct response" is Bc5. But why?

Kallia first goes through the very natural Nf6 and how the two knights defense makes life very tough for black. He covers in detail the major lines of the two knights
a) Violent central attack (4 d4)
b) Attack on the f7-pawn (4 g5)
and their sub-variations

Having shown why 3 ..Nf6 isn't so good he then looks at 3..Nd4 (and shows how it is refuted by 4Nxd4 (while telling white to avoid the trap of 4Nxe5). Then he looks 3..Be7 and how this ends up too passive. Thus 3..Bc5 seems to be the only move left. From here the 3 main lines of the Italian are discussed, etc... Detailed thorough discussion of the basics for people who are capable of understanding opening theory but just don't know it yet. This book lays the groundwork for you to read an MCO level book. I strongly recommend it for the player with a USCF rating over 1000 and under 2000.

A solid book covering a variety of openings

Much like 'Basic Chess Openings' by the same author, this book covers many of the more common 1 d4 and other openings. Queens Gambit, Kings Indian, and a couple of others are covered in-depth with many of the variations discussed. Unlike some books, Grandmaster Kallai really tries to describe what you are trying to achieve with each opening/variation. For basic/intermediate level of play, I really recommend this book. The only reason it doesn't get five stars is because some openings are simply glanced at - almost as if it was a rush finish.

An Introduction to Repression

This is another important contribution to the ongoing critic of imperialist culture that many mistaking think ended at the start of the twentieth century. In the vein of Chomsky, Vidal and Jardine, "Real Story Series" pamphlets, Zepezauer gives a quick overview of, perhaps, one of the most dishonorable ongoing chapters of US history. This book is not meant to go into a detailed analysis' of CIA activities, but rather introduce the nefarious activities of this powerful agency to the public. Within this book one will be introduced to the CIA's involvement in the overthrow of democratic governments all over the world. From Nicaragua, Guatemala, and El Salvador and the repeted attempts to bring about the downfall of Castro in our hemisphere, to the Phillipines, Vietnam, Greece, and into Africa, the reader introduced to what could be called the most well financed terrorist organization in the world. This book is only an introduction, as I said, and if one is interested in a more in- depth look at the CIA, check out "Killing Hope" by William Blum. All in all this book is a very good place begin in any investigation of the CIA's activities, especially for those not familar with the subject.

Zepezaur is Superb

I read this book right after september 11th when I was curious about why someone might want to attack the United States. After reading this book all I can say is WOW! Still I had to admit that I was more than a little dubious about the claims this book makes. I spent several months doing research and was severely disappointed when it all checked out. The CIA's Greatest Hits is the short version of some of the sketchiest things we are never taught in school.

Thinking about this kind of stuff tends to make my guts and my intellect roll. In fact, it may be easier to call the book propaganda and lies so I wouldn't have to think about the consequences of our government killing all those people. If you accept it as truth (or just do the long hours of research like I did) you will probably start to ask some difficult questions about the way the government actually works and how it purports to work and why there is such a massive gulf between two.This book takes some of that pressure off by presenting the information with funny little graphics and a tongue in cheek style that allow you to keep reading instead of getting bogged down and depressed. You can even laugh out loud occasionally.

Zepezaur does a superb job here because the book appeals to wide range of people. Someone who is totally unfamiliar with politics could pick this up and finish in a couple nights of light reading. This book scores major points with me because it's easily approachable to those who don't have a strong backing in history, yet the battle hardened Chomskyite will no doubt find new info.

I do wish he had cited sources on the pages themselves instead of in an index. It just makes them easier to check out for people who think this book is full of lies.

I also just want to say that thought it was really funny when one reviewer said "Yes, the CIA has made mistakes" and another responded by saying "A decades-long pattern of murder and subterfuge does not equal an occasional mistake." Another reviewer said that the book was disrespectful...I think it's sad that "respect" means hiding the truth about egregious crimes.

After reading the book I ended up emailing Mark Zepezaur with a couple questions. He was extremely accommodating and super friendly. I also got to talk to him briefly during a book tour and he has been one of the more politically articulate people I have ever met.

If you liked this but felt that it was a little short or didn't present enough hard facts check out another (short) book called Addicted to War: Why the US can't Kick Militarism. Mark Zepezaur also did a similar comic series called "US History Backwards."

Imperialism? A thing of the past, huh?

Mark Zepezauer took advantage, unlike many Americans, of the declassified CIA documents, and compacted complicated events into a single book. I got this book after doing years of research regarding the assassination of John F. Kennedy and Malcolm X. Especially Malcolm X, seeing that COINTELPRO (FBI documents) is all declassified now. Don't take Zepezauer's word for it, do your own research, your own thinking. But with the CIA admission concerning the removal of leaders like Lumumba, Mossedegh, Arbenz, Allende, Sukarno, the Pathet Loa Party and so forth, AND the installation os dictators like Suharto, Pinochet, Shah Phalevi, D'Aubassaun, and members of the Al-Quida in Afghanistan, it's hard to deny that the United States of America was, and still is, an imperialist country. And the only reason there leaders were either removed, or installed, was for the fortification of government-protected corporations in America.

The 20 brisk, imaginative tales (18 previously unpublished, with many written in the 1940s and '50s and others as recent as 2003) in Bradbury's latest collection show the astonishingly prolific author in lights of varying favor. Bradbury aims for a moral in "Chrysalis" (1946–1947), when a young black man who's tried for years to bleach his skin and a young white boy with a deep tan get the same racist response from a hot dog vendor. Skin color is also the issue in "The Transformation" (1948–1949), a set piece in which a gang of carnival workers enact revenge on a notorious rapist with the help of a tattoo gun. Standouts among the more fantastical stories include tales of civilized giant alien spiders yearning for Earthly integration; a pair of traumatized time travelers disturbing their nervous neighbor; and a U.S. president trying to reclaim the country after 12 drunk senators gambled it away to an Indian chief (a story that, Bradbury notes in the introduction, he wrote in "a few hours"). Several entries rely on personal paradox: a "freeway graffiti stuntman" becomes famous only after his accidental death in "Olé, Orozco! Siqueiros, Sí!" and an unknown intruder terrorizes a family of agoraphobes in "The Island." Alternately thoughtful, whimsical, probing and slapdash, these tales are a mixed bag, but a very interesting one.

A literary tour of sixty years

Ray Bradbury is the consummate short story writer of the twentieth century, and this due in large part to the remarkable sense of time and place that he brings to his work. Pick up a copy of "The Illustrated Man" or "The October Country" or "Dandelion Wine" and you will immediately find yourself nostalgic for a time and place that maybe never was. Moreover, his ability to tie his collections together with common thematic elements makes reading any one of these books feel like something greater than the sum of its parts.

"The Cat's Pajama's" however, is a collection that spans some sixty years of his writing, and as such, the stylistic and thematic elements that usually lend cohesion to Bradbury's collections are noticeably absent. The result is a book better nibbled at than devoured. The lack of cohesion can be jarring, and in some ways distracts from the quality of the individual works, but when properly approached, these stories are everything a Bradbury fan could want.

This eclectic collection features some vintage Bradbury, as well as some interesting departures. Examples of the former are the classically creepy "Sometime Before Dawn" and the quirky science fiction of the "Mafioso Cement-Mixing Machine". While written some fifty years apart, they nonetheless share Bradbury's classic sense of style and timing. At the opposite end of the spectrum is the satirical "Hail to the Chief" in which some bad bets reverse five hundred years of American history, and the powerful, but definitely unexpected look at a marriage in "Where's My Hat, What's My Hurry?".

Other highlights include the noir-ish "A Careful Man Dies", as well as "The Ghosts" which explores the supernatural in a way only Bradbury can. "The Transformation" is a remarkably blunt (given that it was written in 1948) look at racial prejudice and violence in the south, albeit from a startlingly different angle. Finally, there are the touchingly sweet "The Cats Pajamas" and "(A Remembrance)" the latter of which is most reminiscent the bittersweet nostalgia of "Dandelion Wine".

There are a few head-scratchers in this collection, mostly because of an overabundance of ambition for a short work rather than flawed premise. However, overall "The Cat's Pajama's" is a unique retrospective on the evolution of Bradbury's work. As such, it is a real treat for longtime fans, but also a great introduction for new readers.

Introspective look into Ray Bradbury's talent

This is a nifty book, a great sampling of Ray Bradbury that literally spans short stories written from the mid-1940s to the present. While the stories are a little more "lighter" in nature than say some of his other works, they definitely have the same science fiction edge that Bradbury is known for. The stories have a way of making you really think about situations and life, and, as mentioned by one reviewer, seemingly have a "Twilight Zone" feel to them.

A few favorites in the book:

"The Cat's Pajamas": A man and woman, who are both cat lovers, find a small kitten in the middle of a deserted road and both hope to take it home. However, they both make a claim on it, so they have to settle whose it will be.

"All Hail to the Chief": Would you believe it! The senators have gone to an Indian casino and gambled away the entire United States while drinking it up. Just wait and see what happens when the President hears about this one. The President goes to the casino in hopes of figuring out how to get the country back, especially before the story leaks to CNN...

"Sixty-Six" : A man comes across a peculiar series of deaths on the highway while going across Interstate 66. Five people dead, all looking like they have come from the Dust Bowl in the 30s. The narrator tries to solve this mystery, and while driving, comes across a unique and mysterious individual riding a jalopy. Could this man have the answers?

"Sometime Before Dawn" : A mysterious couple comes to stay at a rooming house with a family. The narrator and his family can't understand why they hear the wife cry every night. The husband tries to comfort her. The couple seems to act strangely and say things that are elusive to the narrator. They don't appear to be from here.

This is a great book to check out if you want varied stories from one of the greater minds of science fiction. Although spread out from fifty years plus of writing, many of the stories still have great value today, and Bradbury is able to create unique situations of daily life.

The idea of MASH anywhere BUT Korea may be considered bad because of the snore fest called AfterMASH. It was an ill conceived spin off created in hopes of keeping the audience from the TV series.
MASH Mania, however, tears down anything you remember about the TV show and builds up a series of vignettes by Richard Hooker about most of the MASH buddies following Hawkeye home.
Good to see that Henry Blake is still alive in the MASH universe, even if it is only a cameo appearance.
Lazy fun and good friends building their own hospital makes for a fine afternoon's reading.
Hooker knows his characters better than any TV writer does.
If you are a fan of the TV show, pass this one by. I say pass it by, but if you want to see the meat and not just the bare bones, fork over a penny and postage for a book you won't forget.

MASH is timeless

As a teenager I grew up reading every one of the MASH books. Except this one. Until today I didn't even know I had shorted myself one so 40 years later I ordered it and in a few days I will complete my collection. I loved these books and their crazy antics. I also am a huge fan of the series and doubt there isn't a single episode I haven't seen more than once. Plus I own all those on DVD as well. MASH is about a gruesome but necessary topic in the Korean War and this made if laughable. My Dad was in Vietnam when I started reading many of these so books were my escape and Hawkeye, Trapper, and the gang gave me that. I also just received MASH the movie on Blu-ray so to say I'm obsessed would be a little extreme but I am a huge fan of it all.

Good...not Great

The 20th Century was a very innovative time period in music. The influence of globalism and technology undeniably effected the musical atmosphere of the world in the 1900s. Yet Morgan seems far more concerned with atonalism and anti-classicism than the influence of jazz, popular music, recording technology, and even cinematography. While he does not fail to mention these influences, I believe that he did not emphasize their importances adequately. However, there is much to discuss in the world of 20th century music, and Morgan provides excellent insight into the topics that he chose to focus on. A good study of the era but not quite a great one.

COLIN WILSON is the author of more than 100 fiction and nonfiction books. The Outsider (1956), published at the age of 24, earned him worldwide critical acclaim. The Space Vampires, his fi fty-fi rst book, was translated into Spanish, Japanese, French, Dutch and Swedish and was later adapted for screen in the movie LIFEFORCE, directed by Tobe Hooper (SALEM'S LOT, POLTERGEIST, THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE). Deeper and darker...

Gaining cult status fame from the film based upon it (Lifeforce), Space Vampires goes far beyond the screenplay giving rhyme and reason to the alien lifestealers and their actions.
The surviving astronaut is a far more intelligent character and makes a good psychologist and detective - trying to understand what has befallen him and what is yet to follow. He travels Europe researching vampiric legend, is tempted by the heady thrill of sadomastic domination, and eventually confronts an extraterrestrial being with luciferian traits. Like fallen angels, the energy vampires seek to regain their former state of glory, a classic case of the end justifying the means.
The book's ending is far more satisfying than the film's despite the latter's fun Hammer-horror feel, great Mancini score, and Mathilda May's glorious body. Enough to stir even the most space-frozen soulstealer to acts of volcanic passion...

Surprising and engaging little gem

Loved the campy horror movie from the 80s...who knew it was based on such a dark and well written story. This is a surprising little gem of a novel...quickly read and "absorbed" if you will...gives a much more believable backstory that the movie ever attempted. A nice find after all these years...give it a try and be pleasantly rewarded...

A brilliant and thought-provoking Sci-fi novel.

In the year 2100, astronauts lead by Captain Carlsen investigate a bizarre spaceship that resembles a European castle of old stories while exploring space. They look inside to find that it's like something out of a Dracula story even with weird paintings made from a space substance, Carlsen and the crew discover large dead Octupus-like creatures and lots of semi-nude humanoid beings preserved in special coffins as they decide to bring a few which is two females and one male back to Earth in London for research. However they do wake up and escape as they are vampire-like alien beings that drain energy out of humans to get power including inhabiting the bodies of sex-murder victims including possibly the Prime-Minister, a professor of criminology and real-life vampirism known as Falleda with a inspector named Caine join up with Carlsen on trying to find out a way of how to destroy these intergalactic soul-suckers or else humanity might be contamined.

Intelligent and lovecraftian work of Sci-fi and horror fiction melded nicely by acclaimed author Colison Wilson. This one gives readers a unique and very refreshing approach on the vampire legend as these creatures have visited Earth before to create maps for humans mainly the greeks and even create the legends of vampires, succubi and other monsters of lore. But the core of this novel is that vampirism does exist as we are all vampires who drain energy from other things and the creatures here aren't like your father's vampires told in Bram Stoker or Ann Rice, these creatures have no fangs and suck only energy/youth/lifeforces out of beings instead.

It's a story about discover and what if there was other life out there beyond our world, it is also a philosphil tale about what could be evolution's true link. The 1985 movie "Lifeforce" was excellent but very loose adaptation that goes more for sex, gore, zombies and that sort of thing but not close as this book though.

If your looking for a very original and refreshing story about aliens and vampirism, i recommend reading this book.
