About the Author
Lewis Grassic Gibbon (James Leslie Mitchell) was one of the finest writers of the twentieth century. Born in Aberdeenshire in 1901, he died at the age of thirty-four. He was a prolific writer of novels, short stories, essays and science fiction, and his writing reflected his wide interest in religion, archaeology, history, politics and science.

A Scottish Revelation

This is one of my favorite books. Though written by a man, it presents a woman's point of view in a harsh rural setting in Scotland at the turn of the century. Some people might find it tedious to wade through the first chapter because it presents the history of a town since the dawn of civilization: it setting, legends, and characters. I found it fascinating because it gave me the feeling, when the contemporary story began, that I had grown up in the area and knew the background on all of the characters that cross the main character's path. The main character is Chris, a young teenage woman who experiences her family's move to the countryside around Aberdeen, Scotland. Her vivid descriptions of the landscape, the people she encounters, and her family make this an uncommon story of a young woman's spirit and experience. Because Chris has experienced some education and excelled in her studies, her manner of speaking alternates between proper English and the rural dialect of the region, giving the reader a sense of what was happening throughout Scotland's countryside at the time: the intrusion of modernity into ancient rhythms and rural, isolated ways of being. Harsh, glorious, and heartbreaking, the story took me inside of Chris--her heart and mind. She is part of my memory now as though I had really known her and the contradictions of family life in rural Scotland more than 100 years ago.

Well worth the read

This is a classic of Scottish literature. The first novel is likely the most read, but the other two follow main characters through several decades of their lives. It is definitely a good read for anyone interested in the social history of Scotland's rural population in the early 20th century. The trilogy shows how all the social, political and economic factors of the times affected the poor. Too often, we only read/see how such factors affected the wealthy, e.g. the characters in Downton Abbey. So, the trilogy gives the reader a more rounded sense of what it was like to live through these times. The attempt to replicate rural dialects can be charming, but members of my book club whose first language is not English, found the language to be hard work.

The beginning of this book moves very slowly through the history of a small Scottish village. One you get through that, the story gets more and more intriguing. The characters are very well developed and the story draws you in as if you were living it. fantastic work

I have been searching for years for a guitar arrangement for this classic piece. Finally, it has arrived. This is truly an outstanding piece of work. Many creative and unique solutions to express this piece on guitar. The recording is fantastic and a joy to listen to, but also very helpful in learning the music. I can't recommend this collection high enough. It is really outstanding.

great book, terrible editing

I agree with the previous posts that this is a must-read for anyone interested in the MacDonald case. However, as interesting and informative as it is, the typos, strange syntax and poor grammar are very distracting. I wish someone had taken the time to really edit this book. At almost $30 for a paperback, I would expect better quality. That being said, I am voraciously devouring the book.

Good, but needs editing

Just finished this book - what a read! It gives you all the information you could ever need on this mystery. Tighter editing would help, which is why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. There is a tendency for the author to leave words out of a sentence, or failure to indentify what or whom is being introduced; and some stuff could have been left out without disturbing the content. The story is laid out more or less chronologically, and I couldn't put it down by the time I got to the last third. The convincing summary presented at the end was superb (and I won't spoil it for you).

Syntax and Grammatical Errors Mar Great Book

This book is well researched and properly laid out--unfortunately there are 2 or 3 errors in grammar, syntax and poor editing on nearly every page which made reading it difficult and annoying. If you can get beyond these errors you will find that this book is an absolutely riveting account of the MacDonald Family Murders. I'm sure his supporters will use these mistakes to "prove" that he is being railroaded: errors in text= errors in evidence. I hope Ms. Masewicz will have a second edition with the necessary corrections. This is too important a book to be dismissed simply for editing issues. L.A. Hammer

About the Author
Jan Yoder earned her doctorate in psychology in 1979 from the State University of New York at Buffalo. Her interests in women, gender, and feminism developed professionally through her observations of the first women cadets at West Point and personally through her own struggles with sexual harassment, dual-career challenges, work-family juggling, and women s universal exposure to sexism. Her job paths traveled a circuitous but enlightening route through West Point, where she stood out as one of the first two civilian women to teach there; through a small student-centered college in St. Louis, Webster University; through an exhilarating foray into the world of advertising and marketing research in Chicago at DDB Needham Worldwide; to large research-oriented universities in Milwaukee and finally Akron. The wealth of these diverse experiences comes through in this book as she blends a strong research base with her sensitivity to women s and men s everyday lives and with an engaging style that comes from teaching for over 30 years in a variety of college and university settings. Her teaching has been recognized with the Heritage Award for Distinguished, Longstanding, and Substantial Contributions to Feminist Teaching from the Society for the Psychology of Women (SPW; APA, Division 35) in 2006, with the Teacher-Scholar Award from the University of Akron in 2008, and with both university (1994) and college (1996) distinguished teaching awards at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Her involvement in research culminated in 2010 when she became Editor of Psychology of Women Quarterly, the official journal of SPW published by Sage, which put her at the cutting edge of reviewing feminist research an ideal vantage from which to write this text. Her service to SPW, spanning over two decades, was recognized in 2010 with the Sue Rosenberg Zalk Award for Distinguished Service service that includes being President of SPW in 2000-2001 as well as secretary, program chair, newsletter editor, and other assorted positions. She continues to live in Akron, Ohio with her soul-mate, sociologist John Zipp, and is deeply proud of her children as they work toward finishing graduate school (Kate) and college (Dan). With an increasingly empty nest, she is re-discovering hobbies of gardening , reading, and hiking and appreciates the unfailing companionship of her stay-at-home cat (Emma) and dog (Meg).

Good Book

I needed the 4th edition of this book for a class and this one worked just perfectly. I compared it to the 4th edition and they were practically the same. Got a B+ in the class. Also, just a very good book. Extremely interesting and quite eye-opening.

Very Good & Led me to challenge my beliefs

When I took Psychology Of Women I was a bit nervous as I had already seen what passed for feminist academic research in my Intro To Soc. textbook but this book was heads above that one in that it did not use outdated, nearly archaic research. Yoder lays out her case with compelling evidence, examples, and logic, which is something the authors of the aforementioned book did not do. All of her assumptions were backed up and I recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn about feminist theory.

I needed this text for a course on the Psychology of Women. It was an outstanding fit and I'm glad this was the book selected. There were time, however, where it was a bit dry.

This development raises an important and almost insoluble problem for the perfumer, who is faced with the necessity of trying to keep unchanged the bouquet of his fragrances, and moreover, to ensure no loss of strength and diffusiveness. Of course, this problem applies more especially to the adjustment of formulae for established perfumes, because in every new creation the present high cost of raw materials receives imperative con­ sideration before the formula is approved.

The Perfumer's Bible

This book is what is called the Perfumer's Bible.
The first edition was from 1923, a time when synthetics were limited in number. It is a wonderful read for an interested amateur as myself. I learned almost everything that I know about perfume making from him. W.A.Poucher was chief perfumist with Yardley for over 30 years.
But be aware that this 9th editon is the original writing by W.A. Poucher. The 10th edition is not written by him. His title and name is used to make an up-to-date edition with no comparison to the original.

A bit overpriced for what you get. There are plenty of formulas that are somewhat dated. I doesn't include most of the modern aroma chemicals. But it does give some valuable formulae for synthetic rose otto and some others. Not worth the cost in my opinion...
