It pays to read between the lines...

Ok, I can see how someone would initially give this book a bad review, Mr Simmons talks alot about himself and on the surface it appears to just give Westside Barbell members stats. However, their is some solid gold information. I have added over 100lbs to my bench in 3 months just off using the methods I learned from this book. I am a strong big guy but I had no idea about form or technique much less that if I train my back I increase my bench, etc. So is this book worth the twenty bucks? To me most definitely it is. If you want to build a big bench which in turn will build bigger muscles via the pathway of greater strength and increase in weight lifted throughout all your exercises, buy the book study the technique and apply the bench specific training it includes. No longer is my bench day flyes bench dumbells and crossovers. Its warmup, bench, upper back ,traps, shoulders, and forearms. Sometimes a light clicks on and this book helped my big bench light click on. There is also a Westside book of squats and deadlifts. It will do the same for your lifts. The technique and support muscle specific training really pays off. Apply these methods for 2 months then return to your normal routine and you'll be a fan of the book. Periodization pays off. So to wrap this up, yes he talks alot about himself and his crew. Frankly theyre bad asses, but there is alot of really good big bench knowledge in here. Sure no gym has bands mini bands foam press days or board pressing, but the theory behind the supplemental exercises that support a big bench is priceless. To adapt to training is to never adapt to training. Good luck.

Nice manual for the right type of athlete...

The manual is decent in explaining Westside Training. Please keep in mind that Louie and Westside has not produced even 1 IPF World Champion (IPF governs powerlifting worldwide). ZERO. They have however produced several XYZ Federation Champions. Also consider that Westside and Louie has hand selected performance enhanced (steroid using) athletes to train at Westside. Drug free athletes should stay completely away from this system. On the other hand, if you are a synthetic (PEDs using) athlete then this manual will work well for you. Several purchases will need to be made to follow the protocols in the manual. You'll need boards, bands, chains, pads, foam, power rack, specialty bars, and more...

I can’t express enough how stupid his theories are

If you are buying this book you are probably doing so because it is a requirement for Jeffery Adams class at UNCG. I am not writing this as a spiteful student, I am writing this because I am trying to spare anyone who reads this book, which is nothing but Jeffery Adams bizarre theories. His theories are bizarre and condescending to anyone he does not consider to be an intellectual- which is most people. What is most aggravating is that Jeffery Adams theories are not supported by any evidence what so ever. He often contradicts what the Coen brothers themselves say in interviews, in order to support his own theory. The Coen Brothers would not approve of this book nor Jeffery Adams. His theory of homosexual overtones, in “all” of the Coen brothers films, is offensive to everyone in the homosexual community. I can’t express enough how stupid his theories are. If two male characters sit in a car together, or punch each other or if a male character has a girl’s name, by his theory those characters are Homosexual. Which is offensive because that’s not what homosexuality is. But Adam asserts that these things are obvious to the well-educated and if it isn’t obvious to you then you’re too dumb. Again, these theories would be fine, if they were supported by any evidence at all and if Adams didn’t criticize any other interpretations. The Coen brothers themselves say that they want people to enjoy their movies with their own interpretations and to not over-analyze them. Jeffery Adams goes against that and holds his own opinions and theories above everything else. Please buy a different book and if you’re taking this class please drop it- Jeffery Adams was the worst teacher I ever had simply because he is soooo pretentious and refused to validate anyone’s ideas nor does he treat people with a decent amount of respect.

Important, underrated Voice - in his own words

Henryk Skolimowski (if you're not Polish, don't even try to pronounce it) is a gem of a "practical" contemporary philosopher who has not received proper recognition by the "How do we fix the world" circles. His writing is passionate, never obscure, and addresses very creatively the foremost philosophical problem of "understanding all of reality's aspects - cosmos and consciousness".

This is an early effort by Skolimowski to expound his idea of "Evolution in the Sensitive Cosmos" - a subtitle of this volume. His subsequent books, with similar themes, are "A Sacred Place to Dwell" and "The Participatory Mind" go even further in explaining his grand vision of a cosmos that is co-created by consciousness. These books are highly recommended as well. This reviewer is also looking forward to reading his latest Let There Be Light: The Mysterious Journey of Cosmic Creativity.

Skolimowski's style is very straightforward, intended for the general reader and doesn't get bogged down in technical arguments. This book, and his other efforts, are chock-full of potential aphorisms for the Ages. For example there is this opening sentence of Chapter 1: "What is most important about man is that he is a sensitive being; that he is endowed with sensitivities; that via sensitivities he is making his evolutionary ascent." Or from the end of the book: "God is evolution realizing itself; transforming us into more and more radiant fragments of godliness. We are God in the making."

This way of thinking may be seen as offensive, heretical and outright blasphemous to any adherent of "traditional" religions, especially of the Abrahamic branch. What Skolimowski is attempting to do is to find a way of thinking that transcends the false dichotomies of Religious v. Scientific thinking and discourse about Being and Becoming. He is asking a very important theological and cosmological question - if the physical cosmos has been evolving, why do we still think of God in such static, non-evolutionary terms?

This reviewer has found this book liberating by being a challenge to conventional thinking about evolution, consciousness, the sacred and the profane, mind and matter.
