Brilliant Balletic Comedy & Translation

In both these plays, Wilbur brings Moliere's true genius to real life. Previous translations of Moliere's work pale by comparison to Wilbur's brilliant translations. It was my feeling, that would Moliere by alive today, and writing in American English, he would write the way Wilbur translated it.
In comparison to prose translations in the past, Wilbur, past US Poet Laureate and Pulitzer Prize winner, truly gives the reader the real feeling of Moliere's "Balletic Comedy" style, as Moliere used his poetry and comedy to make complex and serious points about life of "regular" people, as opposed to royalty such as Shakespeare concentrated on, and so many other playwrites of the past.
In reading Wilbur's translations, one can virtually imagine the cast prancing and mincing across the stage as they humorously render these rhyming couplets at each other, and the audience. The true genius of both Moliere and Wilbur is illustrated most profoundly and strikingly in these translations. Any true lover of Moliere, and even those who have never read him before, should treat themselves to Wilbur's translations for a Moliere experience, that is unparalleled in any other versions previously published.

The misanthrope and the religious hypocrite

Moliere's leading characters often have one major negative trait which dictates their behavior throughout the play. In this they often seem to be mechanical stock characters and not flesh- and - blood living human beings. In 'The Misanthrope' Alceste believes he must tell the truth to everyone he sees. This is despite the advice of his best friend Philinte. Alceste alienates everyone. At the same time he is madly in love with with Celimene. He wants her to go away with him to retreat from hypocritical society. She however flirtatious and light - minded prefers society to him. The play closes with Philinte trying to persuade Alceste not to leave society completely.

In the second play in this volume the leading character is a religious hypocrite. He finds his way into the heart and mind of a wealthy gentleman Orgon and dominates his family life. Tartuffe steals his money , leads Orgon to disinherit his son and offer his daughter to Tartuffe in marriage. Tartuffe attempts to seduce Orgon's wife. Orgon is convinced to hide under a table where he overhears Tartuffe's entreaties. Orgon then decides to eject him from the family but cannot. It is only with the intercession of the king that the religious hypocrite is stopped. This play raised a furor in its day and the Church opposed its production. Moliere's patron Louis XIV allowed its production in private but only after five years allowed its public staging.

In both these plays Moliere viciously satires the human propensity to remain fixed and static in one's own character, and reaction to reality. He derides human folly but always with the redeeming grace of laughter.

For the contemporary reader of the work who does not feel the special force of the work in its original language there often may seem something forced and artificial in the work. Moliere's work it seems to me gain much from being staged and to know them truly reading alone is not enough.

About the Author

HELLA S. HAASSE was born in 1918 in Batavia, modern-day Jakarta. She moved to the Netherlands after secondary school. She started publishing in 1945 and many of her books have gained classic status in the Netherlands. Haasse has received several prestigious literary awards, among them the Dutch Literature Prize in 2004, and her work has been translated into many languages. INA RILKE translates Dutch, Flemish and French literature. Among the authors she has translated are Hafid Bouazza, Louis Couperus, W.F. Hermans, Erwin Mortier, Cees Nooteboom, Pierre Peju and Dai Sijie. She has won the Vondel Translation Prize, the Scott Moncrieff Prize, and the Flemish Culture Prize for literary translation.

Good old fashioned family saga and colonial memoir.

Written from a Dutch perspective, which gave different nuances and much depth to paint a picture of what life was like for the colonialists in Indonesia over a century ago. The translation carried across well, and the details are rich and inviting. A different product from more modern works which caters to a shorter attention span, expect to devote a fruitful weekend cuddled up with this book.

Grippng read - definately one fr a rainy day with tea and gingernuts!

I can't put this down, the detail is perfectly set between town and country, the trials and tribulations of the settler and main character are really great. The translation must be word perfect as the text doesn't read in a stilted manner the text flows as if written in English an I know Dutch isn't that directly translatable, however a translation of the Indonesian-Eurasian terms would be great or updated wikapedia. Simply a brilliant read about an adventurous time for Dutch colonialists.

Sizzling Civil War Era Memoir

This was a fascinating glimpse into the Oneida community and an amazing find.
Tirzah Miller is the niece (and lover) of community founder John Humphrey Noyes and has access to the real inner circle of community leadership. You follow her various lovers (the marriage had 200 members and they practiced a form of 'complex' marriage that left Tirzah with MANY suitors) and the trials and tribulations of her love life in intimate detail. There are curious omissions in the memoir (which Fogarty points out in his thorough introduction)-- she doesn't chronicle the birth of her first child George (the offspring of one of her other uncles, born without the sanction of marriage leader Noyes) nor the death of the father of George's father (George, Sr. dies before the baby is born). You are not sure whether this was an omission on Tirzah's part or an omission made by the descendents who released the memoir to the public (more likely it was the descedents given Tirzah's candid style). And there are several gaps in the journal where Tirzah was working on the community newsletter and stopped writing. These omissions frustrate the reader a little, but obviously there is nothing Fogarty can do about it, except speculate on the reasons behind the omissions in the introduction and provide missing background info which compensates somewhat.
The material that Tirzah did choose to write about is both poignant and sensational! Not only was her uncle an avid promoter of incestuous relationships (he felt the devil was behind social mores prohibiting this), but she chronicles several other outlandish suggestions John Humphrey Noyes makes for improving the community sex life (like, live sex acts performed during the religious meetings- a plan he never actually implemented). But the real heart of the journal comes from her painful experiences falling in love with and losing the love of her life due to strict community criticism of 'special love' relationships. It is heart-breaking to see her turn her back on a man she loves, teach their child to revile him and public renounce him all for the sake of her uncle's rather un-natural influence over her.
By the end of the book you feel as if you have been introduced to and become the intimate acquaintance of a remarkable historical figure. Tirzah's memoir is basically the story of a modern woman (she had a job, serial lovers, daycare, short hair and wore a unique trouser outfit) only, shockingly, she lived in the civil war era. A must read for feminist history enthusiasts!

An Insider's View of Oneida

We can now read the memoir of a woman who lived in the famous Oneida community of the nineteenth century and did her best to live up to its principles. Tirzah Miller was born in 1843, and her unique memoir, published as _Desire and Duty at Oneida: Tirzah Miller's Intimate Memoir_, edited by Robert S. Fogarty (Indiana University Press), gives us a view of how some very strange sexual principles were practiced under Biblical inspiration. Miller's memoir was part of the Oneida archives, which were opened in 1993, and are fully printed here for the first time. There is useful editorial introduction and notes to prepare a reader for much of Miller's descriptions. Miller was the most important figure among the younger generation at Oneida, which had been founded by her uncle John N. Noyes, a prophet of "Perfectionism" which, among other things, entailed shared sexual relations in order to make jealousy impossible, and even planned breeding of humans to bring out the best traits in the young.
Tirzah Miller was involved in this sort of breeding, and writes about her participation. Her memoir tells about her doubts about Noyes, doubts which were always soothed by prayer so that she continued within the community. She was Noyes's favorite sexual partner, but had longings for others, and acted on them. Among the difficulties this caused was that there must not be any sort of "special love" analogous to marriage. Miller writes quite a bit about how she has to avoid this, and about her quarrels with Noyes, and about her liaisons with other community members.
Miller's memoir breaks off during the tumultuous end of the community. There had been raids on Oneida by ministers from the outside, shocked at its peculiar principles, but also Oneida was racked with internal dissention as members strove for more independence. Noyes declared that traditional Pauline marriage was now to be advised, and before the community broke up, Miller was able to abandon her worry that her love for the father of her third child was "too special;" she married him exclusively, and lived thereafter in apparent happiness. Her memoir is good reading to reveal a lively, thoughtful, and reverent woman, and throws welcome light on the innermost workings of a famous, failed social experiment.

Tamil cinema in the last 83 years has reached its pinnacle in terms of creativity and technical brilliance and dominates other film industries in India especially, Telugu and Hindi. My first book on Tamil Cinema, ‘THE BEST OF TAMIL CINEMA: 1931 to 2010’ released in 2011 as a tribute to the film makers who made remarkable films over the years, is the key motivator for me to write this second book.

While working on the revised and updated version of THE BEST OF TAMIL CINEMA, I chanced upon many Tamil films, which won National and International recognition and felt I can bring out a separate book on them, that can become a proud possession of film makers, researchers, people interested in films and common audience. I reviewed the entire list of films, which won the National Film Awards from Government of India and the films that were selected to be screened at the Indian Panorama of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) – considered as an honour to represent the country. As all these films were selected by an eminent jury over the years for both National Film Awards and Indian Panorama, I did not wish to judge and exclude any film based on my view on them and hence included each and every film, which won a National Film Award under any category and the films which were screened at Indian Panorama of IFFI, since the commencement of these awards and recognition in 1953. Along with this I have also included the films which were submitted by Film Federation of India (FFI) to represent the country at the Academy (Oscars) Awards over the years.

During the period 1954 to 2013, one hundred and sixty three (163) Tamil films have won the National recognition under various categories, and each of them is covered in detail in this book.

For the period 1931 to 1953 (pre-National award recognition years), I carefully selected 39 films, which are certainly Pride of Tamil Cinema, with the help of Tamil cinema chronicler, ‘Film News’ Anandan, to represent that period. Thus, this book has information on about 39 films for the period 1931 to 1953 and 163 films for the period 1954 to 2013 (total 202 films) to represent the entire period of Tamil Cinema. Extensive research was done to ensure that not a single film, which won a National or International recognition, is left out in this book.

Along with Feature films, I have also researched the Non-Feature films and Best Writing on Cinema, which won National Film Awards and written about them in a separate section. Details of non-feature films, which were screened at the Indian Panorama of IFFI, were also included in the non-feature films section. Thus, this book is an exhaustive compilation of Tamil films which won National and International recognition in all categories during the period 1953 to 2013.

At National Film Awards and Indian Panorama, the criterion is not commercial success of a film but aesthetic and technical excellence and hence without looking into whether the film was a commercial success or released in theatres, I went by the list of films, which won a National Film Award and, or screened at the Indian Panorama over the years and featured them in this book. Hence, you might find a few films, which you may not have even heard or seen, but have won a National Award for their excellence featuring in the book.
